CHICAGO -- Cubs catcher Michael Barrett could miss the rest of the season after he was hit in the groin with a foul tip and underwent surgery.

He will miss at least two to three weeks and was scheduled to be released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Sunday, trainer Mark O'Neal said.

The Cubs placed Barrett on the 15-day disabled list Sunday and called up Buck Coats from Triple-A.

Barrett was injured by Matt Cain's foul tip in the fifth inning Saturday. He left the game after batting the next half-inning. Barrett went to the emergency room and an ultrasound showed bleeding inside his scrotum. Surgery took less than an hour, O'Neal said.

Barrett felt ill after his at-bat in the fifth. Cubs manager Dusty Baker said no one knew Barrett was hurt during Cain's at-bat. Full story

Beltran's injury is not that serious

HOUSTON -- Carlos Beltran says his bruised left knee fees "a lot better" the morning after he crashed into the fence in left-center field at Minute Maid Park making a leaping catch.

The three-time All-Star, who has 39 home runs and 112 RBI for the Mets this year, was out of Sunday's lineup, but Mets manager Willie Randolph expected Beltran to return as early as Monday.

Beltran left a dent in the fence after catching Lance Berkman's fly ball in the ninth inning of New York's 4-2 win over the Astros on Saturday night.

After the catch, he made a throw to the infield, then went down to the ground. Randolph and team trainers ran out to examine him before Beltran gingerly walked off the field with help.

Rangers bring up Rheinecker, Ojeda

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers recalled pitcher John Rheinecker from Oklahoma and purchased the contract of catcher Miguel Ojeda from the Triple-A farm team.

Texas also transferred outfielder Brad Wilkerson to the 60-day disabled list. Wilkerson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 16 and had surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Rheinecker was 4-5 with a 6.03 ERA in 13 starts with the Rangers before being optioned to the minors on Aug. 1.

Ojeda started the season with the Colorado Rockies and was loaned to the Mexico City Reds before Texas acquired him on July 30. He hit .230 with two homers and 11 RBI in 25 games with the Rockies.

Royals bring up Costa

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Shane Costa was recalled by Kansas City and started in right field against the Chicago White Sox after batting .342 in 52 games at Triple-A Omaha.

Costa hit .267 with three homers and 18 RBI in 52 games during two previous stints with the Royals this season.

Right-hander Luke Hochevar, on option to Single-A Burlington Iowa in the Midwest League, was promoted to Double-A Wichita in the Texas League. Hochevar, he top pick in June's amateur draft, was 0-1 with a 1.17 ERA in four starts with Burlington.
