    News
According to the Sports Xchange notes: Manager Dave Trembley is in a predicament. He believes he has to keep Steve Trachsel in the rotation, but he also believes he can't keep using Trachsel unless the veteran right-hander's pitching improves a great deal. Trachsel's years of knowledge and his ability to help the young pitchers in the rotation mean nothing if he can't do what's needed of him on the field. He hasn't shouldered his share of the load. Trachsel, 37, hasn't gotten through four innings in three of his last four starts. He is 1-4 with a ballooning 7.43 ERA. Still, Trembley doesn't want to give up on him just yet. "I would say there's not going to be any review, and he will make his next start. His role here is to start," Trembley said. "I've never thought of putting him in the bullpen. He's pitched a long time in the big leagues, and he's never pitched out of the bullpen. I don't see a reason to think about doing that now."

SP Brian Burres lost his second straight start and the Orioles have dropped four straight games and six of seven after losing 4-2 Tuesday against the A's. Oakland got three straight two-out singles in the first off Burres (3-3), including Emil Brown's RBI blooper that landed just inside the right-field line and stayed put. Oakland loaded the bases again against Burres with three straight singles to start the third and scored twice in that inning. Burres was charged with eight hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out one.

    News
Orioles manager Dave Trembley announced that SS Luis A. Hernandez had lost his job to Freddie Bynum, who just came off the DL on Friday. A poor play by Hernandez on a potential double-play grounder in Oakland on Wednesday night led to Baltimore's fifth straight loss and persuaded Trembley to make a change. A three-run eighth inning had given the Orioles a one-run lead. But with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom half, Hernandez was playing deep and did not charge a slow-roller hit straight to him by the slow-running Frank Thomas. Because Hernandez waited on the ball, there was no chance for the inning-ending double play. The A's tied it and eventually won in the 10th on Mark Ellis' home run. "I didn't have to see any more," Trembley said.

Orioles manager Dave Trembley said Freddie Bynum, activated Thursday from the 15-day disabled list, would replace Luis Hernandez as the team's starting shortstop. "Right now, Bynum is the starting shortstop on this team," Trembley said before the Orioles opened a four-game series in Kansas City. "What that means is he will be the regular guy that plays." Infielder Eider Torres was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to make room on the roster.

    News
Orioles SP Daniel Cabrera pitched a complete game Thursday at Kansas City, winning for the third time in five starts. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk, recording seven strikeouts. "That's the best I've seen him pitch," said manager Dave Trembley. "In previous times, he'd start to spin out of control, and he doesn't do it any more. He keeps his focus. He keeps his poise. He gets himself back in his rhythm. He goes back to pitching. He's not a thrower. That's the big difference." Orioles SS Freddie Bynum, just coming off the DL, went so far as to call him a different pitcher. "I don't even know who the guy is," he said. "When I was rehabbing, I watched him pitch, and he's just a totally different person from last year. It's like he's growing up. He's maturing. He's making his pitches when he needs to make them. It's awesome to watch."

    News
Orioles SP Garrett Olson was pretty unhittable Monday against the A's, giving up one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out seven in a no decision. After getting the first out of the seventh, Olson gave up a hit to Emil Brown and walked Jack Cust. Matt Albers took over for Olson and got Bobby Crosby to fly out before pinch-hitter Jack Hannahan beat out an infield single against Jamie Walker to load the bases. The speedy Rajai Davis hit a slow roller into the hole between first and second and easily beat Walker to the bag, allowing Brown to score. Olson was on the hook for the loss before Baltimore tied the game at 1 in the ninth.
