    News
With help from an unexpected power surge at the bottom of the lineup, Red Sox SP Daisuke Matsuzaka picked up his sixth win to remain undefeated Saturday at Minnesota, giving up two runs and six hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts. He walked three. When he came over from Japan before last season, there were reports that he had a gyroball -- a pitch that spins like a football and can break more than a foot from top to bottom -- among at least four other pitches in his repertoire. The Japanese right-hander had a pitch slip out of his hand in the third inning and land about five feet from the mound before rolling to the plate. "That's that gyroball," manager Terry Francona cracked. "It's finally emerged. That was interesting."

    News
Red Sox SP Jon Lester labored through 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision Friday at Minnesota, giving up eight hits and five runs -- three earned. He struck out two. The start was a statistical regression from Lester's last two starts, over which he yielded only one run and five hits in 14 innings and struck out 11. But Lester walked only one after issuing seven over his last two appearances. "A lot of good. A lot of positives. Every start something goes in the right direction," Lester said. "I don't think I took any steps back tonight. I threw a lot of strikes and executed a lot of pitches I wanted to."

    News
Red Sox SP Tim Wakefield, coming off a combined shutout against the Tigers, turned in an atypically brutal start at Minnesota on Sunday. Wakefield's knuckleball always seems to bite a little bit harder in the Metrodome, with the 41-year-old entering 7-3 with a 3.95 ERA in his career under the puffy white roof. But he gave up seven runs -- six earned -- on seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings Sunday, the earliest he's been knocked out of a start since June 20, 1997, at Detroit, when he lasted just 2 1/3 innings. He suffered the loss, striking out two and walking two.

    News
The Boston Globe notes that Hideki Okajima's 0.50 ERA ties him for fifth-best in the majors among relievers. "I've had pitchers talk themselves out of pitching good against a team the next time," Francona said about Okajima's outings Friday and Saturday against the Twins. "It's like, I just went eight innings, got to do something different. It's like, OK, you have your pitches and they're probably either good enough or not. I understand [when] teams get more of a look at you, it's tougher to pitch, but Oki commands whatever he throws. If you go back and watch the video of him pitching, he rarely misses his spot. He might miss the plate, but he doesn't miss his spot. It's unbelievable."
