    News
Struggling reliever Eric Gagne was shaky in his first outing since admitting he didn't deserve to be the Brewers closer any more on Saturday -- a statement he tried to take back before Monday's game. And the team's current closer-by-committee approach didn't look much better when left-hander Mitch Stetter walked his way into giving the Cardinals a chance to come back in the ninth. Gagne walked the first batter he faced, then induced a double play and a groundout. He stayed in for what turned out to be a sloppy eighth inning that included a walk, two singles and a wild pitch.

Rickie Weeks hit a two-run single that gave Milwaukee a 4-3 victory on Friday night and snapped the Brewers' six-game losing streak. Weeks, the leadoff hitter with a .196 average, knew he'd hit so many balls hard with nothing to show for it but still said he had confidence he could come through. Did he ever. The Cardinals shifted to the right, and Weeks rifled a ball to left field, slapping first base coach Ed Sedar's hand hard as he rounded the bag and flinging his helmet before Prince Fielder mobbed him. "The way I felt out there, I could've took Mike Tyson three rounds," Weeks said.

    News
The Brewers yanked Eric Gagne from the closer's role on Sunday after the reliever called his latest performance embarrassing and said he didn't feel he deserved to pitch the ninth anymore. Manager Ned Yost said he read Gagne's comments and will use a closer by committee approach while Gagne takes what Yost called a "mental break." "He's really pushing himself really, really hard and taking it really, really hard," Yost said. "We'll probably just mix and match, I'm not going to do anything crazy." Yost said he hopes Gagne works his way back into the closer's role. Possible options to close games include Guillermo Mota, David Riske and Salomon Torres.

    News
Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo will have surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his right knee and will likely miss the rest of the season. Gallardo said there was no chance he could avoid having surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament and he will complete his rehabilitation in Milwaukee. He hopes to return in September or October, but players typically need four to six months to recover. "I wish I was talking about my performances," Gallardo said Sunday in the clubhouse with his knee still wrapped.

Relievers Salomon Torres and Brian Shouse helped make Jeff Suppan's seven solid innings stand up by holding on for a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The relievers preserved the victory for Suppan (2-2), who became the first Milwaukee starter other than Ben Sheets to win a game since Manny Parra beat San Francisco on April 5. Suppan worked himself into and out of trouble all afternoon, allowing a run on seven hits with four walks in seven innings of work. But he was able to prevent the big inning that has plagued the rotation for much of the season thanks to four strikeouts and four base-running gaffes by the Cardinals. Suppan did issue five walks.

    News
The ninth inning for the Milwaukee Brewers' new closer by committee was as adventurous as some of Eric Gagne's recent outings. There was one difference, though: The Brewers held on for the win. With Gagne yanked from the closer's role Sunday after faltering in back-to-back outings, relievers Salomon Torres and Brian Shouse helped make Jeff Suppan's seven solid innings stand up by holding on for a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Torres was called on to protect a 5-2 lead in the ninth. He gave up a leadoff double, but retired the next two batters before walking Cesar Izturis. Yost then brought in left-hander Shouse, who gave up an RBI single to pinch-hitter Yadier Molina. But he got Adam Kennedy to groundout for his first save this season and fifth of his career.
