Back-to-back blowouts against the Nationals is the clearest sign, short of an in-person visitation by Jehovah him/herself, that your so-serious, let's-win-this-thing! team meeting didn't register ... Mike Hampton "might" throw a bullpen session before the month is out ... If the Braves are going to wake up, this week would be an ideal time to do it: Their next six games are against the Marlins and Phillies.

Despite trying to write their own will in recent weeks, they remain just five games out in the NL East. They have a powerful enough offense that can get them back in the thick of the chase with a long winning streak.

The loss of John Smoltz seems to have taken the air out of them. Chipper Jones called it devastating. With all this said, they are only four games out with a crucial series vs. the Philly up here. If the offense can only get hot behind young pitching.

Injuries have cost them dearly, but at least one arm has returned to the bullpen in Mike Gonzalez. They sorely need him healthy and effective if they are going to overcome a make-shift rotation and piecemeal bullpen.

Older teams get injured, so you have to expect some of what they are going through. But the combination of all the lost games just seems unfair in some way.

A week ago we marveled at the potential of a John Smoltz, Rafael Soriano, Mike Gonzalez and Manny Acosta bullpen. So much for that. Smoltz is done for the year, and Soriano is still banged up.

Despite John Smoltz's blown save Monday night, they have the makings of a pretty incredible bullpen now -- assuming Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez can prove healthy in the coming weeks, too. With rookie Manny Acosta in middle relief, you will need to get after them in the early innings or forget about it. A great offense and bullpen can go a long way.

This is one potentially monstrous offensive club. If John Smoltz (shoulder), Rafael Soriano (elbow) and Mike Gonzalez (elbow) all return healthy in June, they will be serious contenders. The bullpen was problematic, but no team could add a trio that talented to plug a hole this time of year.

A John Smoltz setback is not what they needed, but baseball's worst road team (6-16) can get healthy at home against a couple of top-10 teams, New York and Arizona.

It is remarkable how well they have held together amid injury and a suspect bullpen. It will be an interesting litmus test to see if they can take a series in Philadelphia with the bottom three of their rotation going against a pair of Philly aces. The Braves are the best home team in baseball (14-4) and the worst on the road (5-14).
