A.J. Burnett has pitched wonderfully in his past two starts, which means he's due to stink it up against the Orioles on Wednesday, likely with 724 scouts watching his every wince ... David Eckstein has finally and mercifully been benched, and that's that ... On the days when Roy Halladay isn't on the hill, there's no less interesting team in the game.
07/09/20082017
Dustin McGowan (shoulder) might be joining Shaun Marcum (elbow) on the DL, and A.J. Burnett might be joining CC Sabathia and Rich Harden on the trading block. With the right moves this month and this winter, this team won't be far from competing again.
07/01/20081720
Like the Mariners under Jim Riggleman, the Blue Jays are 6-4 under Cito Gaston, who has actually helped the offense come out of its shell some. A stout rotation really helps the Jays stay around the .500 mark, so trading A.J. Burnett is not likely to solve much.
06/24/20082015
The firing of John Gibbons might have been long overdue. Cito Gaston will be called upon to shake up a lineup that is just unfair to its own rotation. The loss of Shaun Marcum further kills their chances in a tough-as-always AL East.
06/18/20081514
Unfortunately, Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay and even Alex Rios have let them down. That pitching staff deserves much better.
06/10/20081411
They are losing games on this homestand to teams they shouldn't be losing to. The return of Vernon Wells should help get/keep them over the .500 mark they have been wallowing around, though.
06/03/20081113
They are surviving a tough road trip. If only they could find some offense -- say, a breakthrough from Alex Rios, perhaps? -- we could see them seriously pushing the Rays and Sox.
05/27/20081315
After an 11-17 April, the Blue Jays have gone 17-8 in May. Only the D-Backs (27-13) and the Angels (26-14) have gotten more wins from their starting rotation than the Jays (24-17). If they could only promise to score more runs. ...
05/20/20081518
It has been an impressive 6-1 stretch against some pretty good contenders. Their pitching can shut you down ... if only they weren't plagued by injuries every year.
05/13/20081813
The fourth-best rotation ERA in baseball hasn't gotten them far and the loss of Vernon Wells seriously damages their hope to change their fortunes. Regardless, they won't finish the year in the AL East cellar.

We praised them for hanging around last season amid their injury woes and now their rotation looks like it is two strong and five deep. The bullpen and defense -- bolstered by Scott Rolen -- is solid, too. So, if Vernon Wells rebounds and Alex Rios becomes a superstar at 27 like we expect, this team can outperform this middlin' ranking.
