The Nats plated 28 runs over the weekend, which is the equivalent of a real major-league offense scoring 113 ... Welcome back, Ryan Zimmerman ... How desperate is this team for offense? They've chosen to regard Willie Harris' hot streak atop the lineup as a sign of actual competence, rather than a brief glimmer of divine favor. Isn't that cute?

Can you believe we actually had e-mail in Week 1 of the season that the Nationals will win more games than they will lose? At least the starting pitching is showing some signs of improvement. This franchise really has a long row to hoe.

Jon Rauch has done a nice job softening the blow of Chad Cordero, who is lost for the rest of the season and well into 2009. Rauch will be their closer long term, and deservedly so, despite Monday night's implosion. In the selling department, Paul Lo Duca or Dmitri Young anyone?

Nick Johnson (wrist) might be out for the year and Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) is not close to returning. They didn't need any bad news. Thankfully, they stay out of the cellar, because they swept the Mariners in mid-June.

The Mariners really helped them look good this weekend, but we still have to downgrade them for their 2-10 record against everyone else in June.

They have to be very cautious with Ryan Zimmerman's partial labrum tear. He is just about the only thing really going for the franchise right now.

Ryan Zimmerman's assignment to the DL is depressing. This was a bad offensive team with him and Nick Johnson healthy. They are barely watched without them.

It is hard to imagine three teams have scored fewer runs than the Nationals -- the Giants, Padres and Royals. Little starting pitching and no offense give them little hope of making it out of the bottom five -- especially in that division.

Kudos to the "softball girls" for sticking it to the Mets and Nelson Figueroa on the road last week. Losing to the L-O's -- our nickname for Lowly O's -- in the Beltway Series? Ugh.

As if they needed motivation to beat the Mets this week, New York journeyman Nelson Figueroa slung some mud: "They were cheering in the dugout like a bunch of softball girls. I am a professional; I take great offense to that. ... They won tonight, but in the long run, look who they are, a last-place team." Dem's fightin' words.
