When Vladimir Guerrero went hitless in five consecutive games last week for the first time in his career and took a .256 average into Tuesday's game with just two hits in a 22-at-bat stretch, reporters gathered round to quiz Guerrero on his slump.
But there were no signs of concern from the perennial All-Star.
"Sometimes you start good. Sometimes you start bad," Guerrero said through an interpreter. "I'm just in a slump. ... You guys are making way too much of it. I'm not concerned."
That same night, Guerrero backed up his words with a pair of extra-base hits against the Royals and finished the series in Kansas City with three hits in his last seven at-bats. But Angels manager Mike Scioscia admitted he had been seeing signs that Guerrero was not quite himself before the two-game breakout.
"He's searching for a comfort level in the box," Scioscia said. "Hitting is so much feel. As talented as he is, you have to get back in touch with what you're supposed to do.
"He's struggling with where his hands feel comfortable, struggling with where his balance is. Maybe it's a handful of games longer than we've seen him, but he's going to find it. When he does find it, he'll have it in a big way for a long time."
