--RHP Steve Trachsel, who said he wanted to help the team more than he had, pitched the type of game the Orioles were hoping for since signing him in the off-season. After not getting through four innings in two of his last three starts, he gave up two first-inning runs then shut out the Royals until leaving the game after 5 1/3 innings.
--DH Aubrey Huff hit the Orioles' second three-run home run in as many days on Friday after the team went through its first 34 games hitting only solo or two-run homers. It was Huff's sixth of the season and he added a double in the seventh.
--SS Freddie Bynum, activated from the DL on Thursday after rehabbing at Class AA Bowie, was told by manager Dave Trembley that, for now, he is the starting shortstop, supplanting Luis Hernandez who, according to the manager, was playing tentatively. Getting two hits in each of his first two games didn't hurt his situation.
--2B Brian Roberts stole his 11th base of the season, putting him on pace to match the 50 steals he had last season. However, Roberts has already been caught stealing four times, putting him on pace for 18. In 2007, he was caught only seven times over the course of the season.
--RF Nick Markakis has reached base in 33 of the 35 games he's played this season.
BY THE NUMBERS 14 -- Times already this season that the Orioles have scored three or fewer runs in a game, not including the 3-3 suspended game that was halted in the 12th inning.
