Like many veteran pitchers, Paul Byrd has diminishing stuff but superior knowledge on how to use it. There isn't much room for error. Byrd is either very good or his numbers are very bad.

Thursday it was more a case of the latter, as he gave up three home runs in a 6-3 loss to the Yankees. Byrd relies on precise control of his pitches in order to make up for his lack of one dominating pitch.

He won 15 games last year using that formula. He's off to a slow start this season, and one of the reasons is his inability to keep the ball in the ballpark.

Byrd has already allowed a team-high 10 home runs in just 40 innings. Six of those 10 home runs have been hit by the Yankees.

Because he is basically a six-inning pitcher at this stage of his career, home runs can be even more damaging to Byrd than to pitchers who can pitch deeper into games. In Thursday's game, he gave up three home runs in the span of 16 batters, which accounted for four of the six runs the Yankees scored.

YANKEES 6, INDIANS 3: Paul Byrd gave up three home runs, and Indians hitters were shut down by Mike Mussina and three relievers. One of the homers allowed by Byrd was by Jason Giambi, who has hit three home runs off Byrd this season. The Indians scored all their runs in the fifth inning, on a two-run double by Casey Blake and an RBI single by Kelly Shoppach.

as shown in today's game and the game two days ago, we need to find a strong closer, right now this is the only thing that is wrong with our pitching, if we get a strong closer we may become unstoppable

(POLL)

As you already know Shin-Soo Choo should be back in a Tribe uniform as earl as June 1st.  When he comes back he has to be on the 25 man roster because he is out of options.  So someone will have to be sent down or released.  Jason Michaels has already been let go so here are my thoughts on what can be done:

I don't know about you guys, but with the recent winning situation the Tribe has been in, that proverbial lump on our necks that we all thought was cancer has completely gone away!

Now, before I forget, who is was our that closer we had at the beginning of the season?

Is it time for a trade to shake the bats out of their slump? The team is hitting .236! WOW! It is as bad as it looks. Thats counting the fact that we have the AL B.A. leader in Martinez! I would like to see a trade for a proven bat that we could drop into the middle of our lineup. (Jason Bay anyone?) I know it will cost alot ...(more)

I recall last year on these boards when Hafner signed his deal with the Indians.  Most everybody was pretty stoked.  Then he went off to choke in the post season and hasn't recovered.  He is on pace to get about 122 hits this year.  I believe he makes $15 mil a year.  He doesn't play the field so I calculate each h ...(more)

I forget the guy's name, but I remember watching Sportscenter and seeing an Arizona pitcher be used as a pinch hitter, and he dinged one. With the struggling offense, I can't help but wonder if they'll ever use CC Sabathia in such a way? I mean, the guy is very vocal about how much he loves to hit. Ever think they might put him in Hafner's place once in awhile, or maybe use him as a pinch hitter a ...(more)

Why is he DH'ing at such a young age?

Is he that bad in the field?

Is he that brittle?

Put him at first and trade for a DH!

Bonds/Griffey?

With the Tribe hopeful to pull out of their hitting slump, there are a few players still dazzling us with their all-star play. Today alone Asdrubal Cabrerea dazzled us in the first game at shortstop where he started a highlight real double play and made a couple of other diving plays. He then in the second game of the twin bill turned an unassisted triple play!  Keep in mind, he has p ...(more)

plays for the Cleveland Indians! We all know Vic has been one of the best hitting catchers for years but his defensive skills and his leadership has put him at the top of the game(obviously my opinion)!  We all know the kind of catcher Vic was when he entered MLB(couldnt throw a guy out to save his life), now he has established him ...(more)
