Six years removed from his last big-league appearance, and after spending last season with the Somerset Patriots (Bridgewater, N.J.) of the independent Atlantic League, Brandon Knight is having a big month.
First he was selected to pitch for the U.S. Olympic team thanks to his strong work this season for the Mets' Class AAA New Orleans affiliate. Knight is 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA.
Now comes word that he is likely to start for the Mets on Saturday against St. Louis. He would take the place of right-hander Pedro Martinez, who left the team to be with his family after the death of his 78-year-old father, Pablo, in the Dominican Republic.
Knight was held out of his scheduled Thursday start with New Orleans, though he might not get the call if the Mets want to keep the Cardinals off balance or just buy some time.
Knight made four appearances for the Yankees in 2001 and seven the following year, getting no decisions and posting a combined 10.71 ERA.
The Mets have at least two other options for Saturday's start. Brian Stokes, who is 9-8 with a 4.44 ERA for New Orleans, is in line to pitch Saturday. Ruddy Lugo, also from New Orleans, is also a possibility as he is scheduled to pitch Friday. He is 7-8 with a 4.93 ERA.
Three minor-leaguers who pitched for the Mets earlier this season aren't options because of timing or injury.
Claudio Vargas started four games for the Mets but last pitched Wednesday; Tony Armas is on the disabled list with a strained abdominal muscle; and Nelson Figueroa pitched Tuesday.
METS 3, PHILLIES 1: Two players who stared into the depths of frustration combined to lift the Mets into first place.
Carlos Delgado's two-run double in the eighth inning and the strong pitching of Oliver Perez carried the Mets over Philadelphia and into first place for the first time since April 19. On June 13, the Mets were 7 1/2 games behind the Phillies.
The Mets are 9-4 this season against the Phillies with five games remaining (Aug. 26-27 at Philadelphia and Sept. 5-7 at Shea Stadium).

Most things are looking up for the Metropolitans these days. By reeling off 10 wins in a row recently, the Mets have gotten themselves back into the thick of the NL East race. Carlos Delgado has rediscovered his stroke after a horrid start, the emergence of
