As Friday's rainout forced the Yankees to wait an extra day for their Subway Series battle with the Mets to begin, they could see calamity happening across town for a change.
While the Yankees are in last place and ready for the next Hank Steinbrenner shot to come at any time -- especially with Johan Santana going for the Mets against his club Saturday -- they don't have the train-wreck feel of their crosstown rivals.
The Mets held a closed-door meeting to clear the air after Billy Wagner again violated manager Willie Randolph's request to keep problems "in-house." This time, Wagner had said some of his teammates were not accountable to the media and were constantly leaving it up to players such as himself to provide answers.
Randolph, meanwhile, acknowledged his "head's on the block" after last season's historic collapse and this year's slow start.
Amazingly, as bad as the Yankees' season has gone so far with injuries, poor offense and starting pitching, the Mets' chaos has deflected some attention away from the Bronx.
METS AT YANKEES, PPD: The game was postponed because of rain and was not immediately rescheduled for this weekend because the Mets already have a doubleheader Tuesday. It likely will be played as part of a two-ballpark day-night doubleheader when the two teams meet again June 27-29.

Don't you think our GM should have checked out Kei Igawa before his knee jerk reaction to losing out on Dice-K? The Japanese players are professionals, not prospects.

What the hell is the matter with Girardi? If I ever saw a player acknowledge the fans while a ball was coming to him, let alone make an error on the play, I would take them out of the game immediately. Is Melky such a star in this league that he can field a base hit while raising his hand to the Bleacher Creatures? I don't think so. This guy has some nerve.
I know that it's been said, but how important has Mike Mussina been this season? I know, after last year's horrific performance, I thought he'd be better in the bullpen making spot starts and long relief appearances. But now he has 13 wins, and he's 3-0 this month with a 1.08 ERA. The guy has struck out 40 batters looking out of h

Again, for those of you upset that we are winning 2-1 instead of 11-8, hold your horses, because here comes another low-scoring series. The A's had the best ERA in the AL. The Twins aren't far behind. Minnesota has also been the MLB's hottest team over the last month. Don't blow them off in anticipat

The two biggest events that have helped give the Yanks some life thus far in July are the incredible bullpen performance (since Joba left, basically) and the re-emergence of Robinson Cano. Starting pitching has been very effective as well - especially Moose, Pettitte, and Joba. Obviously Rivera has been lights out
