Jazz match offer, keep Miles
C.J. Miles, SG UTA
News: C.J. Miles will stay in Utah after the Jazz matched the deal offered by Oklahoma City to the restricted free agent. On July 18, Oklahoma City offered a four-year deal worth about $15 million to Miles, who will be entering his fourth NBA season. Under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, the Jazz had a week to match that offer and said Friday they would do so.
Analysis: In three seasons, the 21-year-old Miles has averaged 4.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.8 assists. Last season, he averaged a career-high 5.0 points and 11.5 minutes per game. Miles said in a conference call that the Jazz "are not going to promise me I'm going to play just because I signed the contract." He doesn't stand to have much Fantasy appeal as a result. Profile
Biedrins headed to Europe also?
Andris Biedrins, C GS
News: Less than a week after the Hawks lost Josh Childress to Greek team Olimpiakos, the Contra Costa Times reports that there are several European teams interested in unsigned Warriors center Andris Biedrins.
Analysis: Biedrins is said to be drawing strong interest by a couple of Russian teams, including deals in the 3-5 year range at $10 million a year. The Warriors will likely only be able to offer him something in the $48 million range for six years. Plus, Biedrins would be playing closer to his Latvian home if he heads to Russia, obviously. It's something to pay attention to, especially if you own Biedrins in a keeper league. Al Harrington and Ronny Turiaf would probably be the team's only options at center should Biedrins leave town. Lakers, Vujacic agree to 3-year deal
Sasha Vujacic, SG LAL
News: Lakers restricted free agent guard Sasha Vujacic has agreed to a three-year, $15 million contract after emerging last season as a key member of the Western Conference champions. "We felt Sasha made great progress in this past year, and our coach showed great confidence in playing him the second half of the season," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said Friday in confirming the agreement, first reported by the Riverside Press-Enterprise. "Assuming he continues to work as hard during the offseason as he has in the past, I don't see any reason that trend wouldn't continue."
Analysis: The 24-year-old Vujacic averaged a career-high 8.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 72 games this season, and 8.1 points 2.2 rebounds and 0.8 assists while playing in all 21 playoff games. Vujacic became a useful pickup in deeper Rotisserie formats as a cheap source for three-point shooting. But he doesn't figure to see enough playing time to have a true breakout season. He'll be worth no more than a late-round pick in larger Rotisserie formats. Profile
Spurs sign Tolliver to deal
Anthony Tolliver, C SA
News: The Spurs signed center Anthony Tolliver to a contract Wednesday, but terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Analysis: Tolliver will find playing time hard to come by on a team with such a tight rotation as San Antonio has. Don't expect to waste much time on him in Fantasy leagues. Profile
Posey officially signs with Hornets
James Posey, SF NO
News: James Posey officially became a Hornet on Wednesday after signing a four-year, $25 million contract. Posey averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds and made 38 percent of his 3-pointers in 74 regular-season games for Boston. In 26 playoff games, he averaged 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds, making 40 percent of long-range shots.
Analysis: His numbers have been strikingly similar over each of his last three seasons and Fantasy owners should expect no more than that in 2008-09. He'll be waiver wire fodder in most Fantasy hoops leagues and should not be drafted in most cases despite his intangibles. Profile
Hart traded to Clippers
Jason Hart, PG LAC
News: The Clippers acquired Jason Hart from the Utah Jazz on Wednesday in exchange for Brevin Knight in a swap of point guards. Hart, who attended high school in nearby Inglewood, rejoins the Clippers after averaging 2.9 points, 1.5 assists, 1.0 rebound and 10.6 minutes in 57 games for the Jazz last season. He played in just two of Utah's 12 playoff games.
Analysis: Hart joined the Jazz as a free agent after splitting the 2006-07 season between the Sacramento Kings and the Clippers, averaging 9.0 points and 4.0 assists in 23 games for Los Angeles. He enjoyed his best NBA season with Charlotte in 2004-05, averaging 9.5 points, 5.0 assists and 1.1 rebounds in 74 games. He'll find playing time hard to come by in L.A. and will not be a recommended draft pick in most Fantasy leagues. Profile
Knight traded to Utah Jazz
Brevin Knight, PG UTA
News: The Clippers acquired Jason Hart from the Utah Jazz on Wednesday in exchange for Brevin Knight in a swap of point guards.
Analysis: The 32-year-old Knight, who joined the Clippers as a free agent in August, averaged 4.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists and 22.6 minutes in 74 games last season. He finished second in the NBA with a 4.62-1 assists-to-turnover ratio. He'll get very limited playing time in Utah behind one of the best point guards in the NBA, Deron Williams. Profile
Andersen signs with Nuggets
Chris Andersen, PF DEN
News: The Denver Nuggets brought back Chris Andersen, signing the frontcourt player known as "Birdman" on Thursday. Andersen was reinstated by the NBA in early March after being kicked out on Jan. 27, 2006, for violating the league's drug policy.
Analysis: The 6-foot-10, 228-pound Andersen played in five games for the New Orleans Hornets last season, averaging 1.2 points and 1.8 rebounds a game. He is a high-energy player, something the Nuggets could use after losing Eduardo Najera to free agency and trading center Marcus Camby to the Los Angeles Clippers. We don't expect him to play enough to be a factor in Fantasy. Profile
Hendrix signs rookie contract
Richard Hendrix, PF GS
News: Golden State signed forward Richard Hendrix, its second-round pick in last month's draft. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Analysis: Hendrix was selected 49th overall out of Alabama. Don't expect him to see much playing time and it's highly possible he'll be playing in the NBDL. Profile
Warriors match, keep Azubuike
Kelenna Azubuike, SF GS
News: The Warriors matched the offer made by the Clippers to swingman Kelenna Azubuike, a three-year deal worth $9 million.
Analysis: The 24-year-old Azubuike, who played at Kentucky, averaged 8.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 21.4 minutes while playing 81 games for the Golden State Warriors last season. Expect him to play a backup role at small forward again this fall. Profile
Turiaf signs with Warriors
Ronny Turiaf, PF GS
News: The Lakers failed to match Golden State's contract offer to C Ronny Turiaf, allowing him to sign with the Warriors.
Analysis: Turiaf will be penciled in as a backup to starter Andris Biedrins, but there could be a possibility he gets significant playing time if talks of Biedrins bolting to Europe turn out to be true. For now, Turiaf is no more than a late-round sleeper pick in Fantasy. Profile
Ellis gets six-year deal
Monta Ellis, SG GS
News: The Golden State Warriors made sure they would have Monta Ellis in their backcourt at least for the near future, re-signing the explosive guard to a six-year deal worth about $66 million Thursday. "We are absolutely thrilled to have Monta under contract for the next several years," said Chris Mullin, Golden State's executive vice president of basketball operations. "He has been one of the top young players in the NBA for the last two years and enjoyed a tremendous season last year. The growth that he has demonstrated at such a young age is incredible and we look forward to him playing a big part in our future success."
Analysis: Ellis, who was a restricted free agent, is expected to take over at point guard next season in Don Nelson's up-tempo offense after two-time All-Star Baron Davis opted out of his contract earlier this month to join his hometown team, the Los Angeles Clippers. The 22-year-old Ellis, selected out of high school in the second round of the 2005 NBA draft, averaged career bests of 20.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.53 steals in 37.9 minutes and 81 games last season. He was named the NBA's Most Improved Player after the 2006-07 campaign. He'll be worth drafting in the first few rounds in 2008-09 Fantasy leagues as a solid No. 1 guard now with Baron Davis in Los Angeles. Profile
Marbury's days in New York numbered
Stephon Marbury, PG NY
News: The New York Knicks signed guard Anthony Roberson on Friday, giving them 16 players under contract and a crowded backcourt and further indicating that the Knicks do not intend to bring back Stephon Marbury.
Analysis: The Knicks will now have 16 players on their roster and will be allowed to have only 15 players when the season begins. Marbury and new head coach Mike D'Antoni did not get along together when they were both in Phoenix and all signs seem to point that Steph is headed elsewhere some time this summer. Fantasy owners could expect him to be playing with yet another chip on his shoulder in 2008-09 if he does indeed get let go by the Knicks. Profile
Roberson signs with Knicks
Anthony Roberson, SF NY
News: The New York Knicks signed guard Anthony Roberson on Friday, giving them 16 players under contract and a crowded backcourt.
Analysis: Roberson has played 36 career NBA games with Memphis and Golden State, but spent last season in Turkey and Israel. The Knicks signed him to a deal after he averaged 14.8 points in five games for their summer league team. Expect him to play backup minutes, making him unappealing in most Fantasy formats. Profile
Childress makes big fat Greek escape
Josh Childress, SG ATL
News: Josh Childress signed a reported three-year deal worth $20 million with the Greek club Olympiakos after leaving the Atlanta Hawks. Olympiakos announced the deal Wednesday. The guard was a restricted free agent, and the Hawks had the right to match the offer. "It's official. I've signed," Childress said. "I was in a situation that I really didn't know what my answer would be when I got to Athens. But it's a great city and a great team, and they did everything to make me feel at home."
Analysis: Olympiakos finished runner-up in the Greek basketball league last year, behind rival Panathinaikos. It has boosted its roster with summer transfers - including Greece star Theodoros Papaloukas, who was signed from CSKA Moscow. Unless you play in a Greek Fantasy hoops league, Childress will have absolutely no Fantasy value until at least 2011. And if you do play in a Greek Fantasy hoops league, can we play? Profile
Blazers sign rookie Batum
Nicolas Batum, SG POR
News: The Portland Trail Blazers signed French guard-forward Nicolas Batum on Wednesday. The 6-foot-8 19-year-old was the 25th overall pick in the draft by Houston, which traded his rights to Portland for picks Darrell Arthur (27th overall) and Joey Dorsey (33rd overall).
Analysis: Batum played the past three seasons for MSB Le Mans of the French ProA League. He averaged 12.3 points, five rebounds and 3.6 assists last season. He'll struggle to earn playing time as a rookie and is worth no more than a late-round flyer in Fantasy leagues as a rookie. Profile
