NBA owners approve Sonics' move to Oklahoma City, pending lawsuit

NEW YORK -- NBA owners approved the Seattle SuperSonics' move to Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season Friday, provided the team can settle its lawsuit with the city.

The Sonics could begin playing in owner Clay Bennett's hometown as early as next season if they can get out of the remaining two years of their lease at KeyArena.

Owners voted 28-2 in favor of the move, with Dallas and Portland voting against. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has previously expressed concerns about the market size, and commissioner David Stern said the Trail Blazers, owned by Paul Allen, didn't say why they voted the way they did.

"The vote further confirms that Oklahoma is in the big leagues and can compete with anyone," Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry said in a statement.

The Sonics, who have been in Seattle since the start of the 1967-68 season, will be the first NBA team to change cities since the Hornets went from Charlotte to New Orleans for the 2002-03 season. Stern said although owners understand the move from a larger market to a much smaller one, they "focused on the likelihood of success in Oklahoma City."

Seattle has filed suit trying to force the Sonics to remain in the city until the lease expires in 2010, while Bennett wants to buy out the remainder. The city already has rejected Bennett's $26 million offer to settle the lease dispute. A trial is set to begin in federal court June 16.

At a news conference Friday, Bennett would not say how much he was willing to offer the city but said he wants a reasonable settlement.

"Step one, I am hopeful we can re-establish communication and some sort of platform to have a meaningful, principled conversation," Bennett said. "Certainly, we're nowhere near that today."

Stern, who encouraged Bennett to make the offer to the city in February, said the league is prepared to play out the remaining two seasons in Seattle. However, he cautioned that would mean a possible loss of $30 million a year for a team playing in front of reduced attendance.

The city's hope is to keep the Sonics in town for what would appear to be two lame duck seasons, to buy time for a group led by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to find an arena solution and eventually purchase the team from Bennett to keep them in town.

Ballmer's group already has proposed paying for half of a $300 million expansion of KeyArena, with the other half coming from the city and from county tax revenues.

"We know the longer they are in Seattle, the better the chance they will stay," Mayor Greg Nickels said Thursday of the Sonics.

"I think if we had a group the caliber of one led by Steve Ballmer and we had an arena pot with $300 million available in it, the NBA would have a hard time abandoning a city that's always had pro basketball -- at least for the last 41 years," he said.

For all the pressure the people of Seattle have put on the owners to leave them here, it makes me wonder why that same effort wasn't made when talking to politicians when the votes came up.  It seems the Seahawks had no issues getting their stadium approved, yet the Sonics have not had that same fortune.  This is the same thing that happened to Brooklyn when they lost the Dodgers ...(more)

this fiasco . The team will do fine as will attendance. OKC is in really 2 markets in one. Tulsa has as many people as OKC and they will commute 55 minutes down to OKC thus the market is on par with many in the NBA. With the price of oil & gas, this part of the country is not feeling this so called recession like many are thus the suites are already sold and high end tickets will be hard to co ...(more)

I know the city of Seattle has to share some of the blame, but Stern also stabbed the city in the back.  Get an NHL team.  It will survive the market, plus finally put a team in the Northwest (Vancouver does not count).  Why would you want another NBA team after this fiasco.  The NBA will rue the day for leaving Seattle.  NHL take notice.

...that's assuming he can fit his fat face between the cheeks.

The only reason he voted against it is because he considers OKC part of his market.

This whole Bennett team moving to OKC ( They are no longer the Sonics ) I have read a ton of posts from both sides  I for one think the whole situation stinks... but oh.. well I guess Sonic fans can hope that Stern gives Seattle an expansion to say Ooops  sorry  like he did for Charlotte.. but  he wont.. in his words Seattle can not support an NBA franchise. Fine.. so be it. ...(more)

Sad sad day.It was along time ago and my true love is football, but when I was a kid my home team won the championship. The community came together it was all people talked about in 1979.

Now I live and breath sports. My wife hates it but my best days are with my friends watching sports.

Stearn ,Shultz, and Bennett you have taken my team .I hope you know that in ...(more)

I for one am glad to see free markets at work.  If the owner of the Sonics wants to move the team, he should have the right to do so.  If it is the best financial decision for him and the franchise, it is nobody's right to tell him differently unless they put up the money to make him whole.  I didn't see anyone willing to make that offer...

I do feel bad for the f ...(more)

This has to be a tough way for it to end for Seattle fans. Like kids whose parents are getting divorced, it's hard enough that their team is leaving, but it only amplifies the pain when there's a sure-to-be ugly court date to follow.

I'll never forget the Seattle days with Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, ...(more)

Sucks to see the Sonics leave Seattle but they people have themselves to blame.  The owners have wanted a new stadium and tried to get it done.  I realize and agree these pro teams often ask for too much public money but it seems pretty clear, either pay to keep the team or watch them leave.   Loyalty is a thing of the past for players AND owners.

At least the ...(more)

How is moving the Sonics to Oklahoma City going to make them more money. Maybe at first because those in Oklahoma will be excited to have a team, but how long will that last? The team isn't making any money and attendence is low because they suck. Moving a team doesn't make them better. Maybe I'm just a little bitter because I'm a Browns fan and I know what it's like to lose your team.

ahhh yes another case of a major sports team extorting money from another city.I myself live in new orleans and it is very common for our sports teams to extort money from my state.I wish we could pass a ban on government giving money to teams to come or stay in a market. If they feel the cant turn a buck then dont pay your dope head  dog fighting players 100's of millions of dolla ...(more)
