Good as gold: LeBron guarantees Olympic title

No more bronze medals for LeBron James. This time he's coming home with gold -- and that's a guarantee.

So he says, anyway.

James made his guarantee in a Time magazine story that hits newsstands Friday. The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar is featured on one of the covers of the Olympic preview issue.

After comparing the feeling of receiving a gold medal on the podium to opening a prized gift on Christmas morning, James was asked if that meant he would lead the Americans to the title.

"Absolutely," James responded.

Asked if he guaranteed it, he repeated, "Absolutely."

The Americans are the favorites, but they haven't won a major title since the 2000 Olympics. James was on third-place teams in the '04 games and the '06 world championships.

James has a mild sprained right ankle and likely won't play Friday when the Americans face Canada in an exhibition game before leaving for China.

If the US doesn't come home with the gold, will James be subject to the same treatment as Anthony Smith was when he guaranteed a Steeler win against New England last season?  Or will his "superstar" status give him a pass even if they lose?

But on another note, it was just a stupid comment.

Best case scenario - You win and come tell everyone "I told you s ...(more)

It's disappointing that this is a negative issue for this country. The Olympic stage is known for uniting countrymen, yet, for some reason, in this country, we enjoy tearing down our stars. It's seriously depressing when a country can't get behind one of their superstars when he simply shows a bit of confidence. Those of you berating your Olympian should be ashamed.

Before he conquered the Aztec empire in Mexico, Hernando Cortes famously destroyed his own ships at Veracruz so that his men would adopt a "win-at-all-costs" attitude.

I think LeBron is doing something similar here.

The 'guarantee' approach doesn't work if you are a bench player, which clearly James is not.  In fact, he is one of this team's spokesmen a

The rest of the world already views Americans as being the most arrogant people in the world. If they don't win the gold medal now, it will look terrible for him and the rest of the team.

The U.S. basketball team should win the gold based on talent alone; however, as we have witnessed in the past, that does not always determine a winner. Some of the Euro teams play together for

....but I agree with his answer here.  He didn't come out and say he was making a guarantee, he was asked by a reporter if he would lead the team to gold, and then asked if it was a guarantee.  I think that saying "no" would have been a sign of weakness.  I guess he could have smiled and said something like:  I'm not here to make guarantees, but yes, we' ...(more)
