Vernon Davis
Height: 6-3 | Weight: 253 | Position:TE | College: Maryland
 Player Profile Draft TrackerOther TE

The following analysis was provided by GM Jr Scouting LLC.

SUMMARY

Davis is a junior tight end who came out early for the draft -- even though there are so many very good tight ends available, he is the best of them all and has made the right decision. He is an elite athlete with the hands, explosiveness and playing speed to make an immediate impact as a receiver and will force defensive mismatches consistently because linebackers lack the speed to cover him in tight man-to-man and he can out-muscle safeties who try to cover him. He is not as competitive or aggressive as a blocker as you'd like, but he has the athleticism and playing strength to be a good blocker when he competes hard on every block. Some teams will downgrade him due to his inconsistent blocking ability, but he has the receiving skills to make the impact of Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez early in his career. His athleticism and smarts will enable him to line up all over the field on offense to create mismatches and he will make a ton of big catches.

STRONG POINTS

Davis is an elite athlete with the explosiveness, playing speed and hands to consistently make big plays as a receiver. Despite running upright in routes, he consistently gets in and out of cuts in a flash, bursts away from the defender to get separation and can stretch the field deep. He avoid the linebacker jam easily and explodes into his route after defeating the jam. He has the hands to reach out and pluck the ball away from his body very easily. His agility, playing speed and strength help him consistently make plays running with the ball after the catch. When he blocks aggressively he can consistently eliminate his man from the play -- he can get to the second level fast, delivers a good initial blow and when he stays after block, he eliminates his man.

WEAKNESSES

The biggest issue with Davis is his lack of consistent competitiveness as a blocker -- he often just tries to stand in the way and does not attack the defender. He needs to bend his knees and block more aggressively in order to consistently eliminate his man.

POSITIONAL FACTORS

6.5Initial QuicknessHe explodes off the ball into routes, but does not consistently get off the ball and into blocking position fast.

6.5Run After CatchHe bursts upfield very quickly, gets to full speed fast, and has the agility to avoid tacklers out in space.
5.0Run Block In-LineHe is a positional in-line run blocker who stays upright and does not block aggressively on a consistent basis.
5.5Run Block SpaceHe can get thru to the second level very quickly and makes good initial contact, but does not finish consistently.
5.5Pass BlockingHe has the feet, athleticism and strength to be solid, but does not block with intensity on every pass play.
6.0Play StrengthHe has very good strength as a receiver, but his playing strength as a blocker is inconsistent.
5.5Fumbles/ErrorHe's not a fumbler, but does make errors as a blocker and it allows his man to make/disrupt plays.

ATHLETIC ABILITYSection Grade: 7.0

Davis is an excellent athlete for a tight end and actually looks like a receiver running routes and running after the catch. He has elite foot quickness which combine with his anticipation of the snap to let him explode off the ball into his route. He accelerates to full speed in a flash and has the top-end playing speed to stretch the field and can get separation deep down the seam. His athleticism enables him to run very quick routes and he consistently can explode out of his cuts to get separation easily. His quick feet, agility and hand use help him to consistently fight thru the linebacker's jam easily and he can avoid in-route bumps. His excellent hands combine with his body control, coordination and concentration for him to adjust and make the great catches seem routine -- he really plucks the high pass remarkably well. He is a quick and explosive runner after the catch with the speed to make big plays. He has the natural flexibility to bend his knees and block with leverage, but more often than not, he stays upright and becomes a positional run blocker.

COMPETITIVENESSSection Grade: 6.5

Davis is very competitive as a receiver and has consistently shown a willingness to catch high passes across the middle, take the very hard hit and hold onto the ball. However, he does not show toughness or aggressiveness often as a blocker. He consistently was Maryland's go-to-receiver and made big catches on the most important downs. On important downs he consistently cranks up his intensity as a blocker and finds a way to eliminate his man. His overall production was excellent as a receiver, but generally was adequate as a blocker because he did not block aggressively and stay after blocks long enough to eliminate his man. He was a very consistent receiver who ran sharp routes, got separation easily, caught the ball very well and has explosiveness running with the ball to make big plays after the catch. He is a team player who lined up at tight end, H-Back, fullback and split out as a receiver depending on what the Maryland offense needed. However, it's a concern that he gives a top notch effort as a receiver, but does not get after and stay on his blocks consistently -- he will just stop blocking at times and lets his man get into the play.

MENTAL ALERTNESSSection Grade: 6.0

Davis is a smart tight end and you can see it in his sharp routes, use of his hands to defeat linebacker jams and his ability to set up defenders in route. He has very good instincts and his excellent quickness off the ball enables him to consistently explode off the ball and get away from defenders in routes. His ability to maintain his focus and concentration is what helps him to consistently make great catches on off-target passes -- he does an excellent job of reaching out and plucking the ball with his hands. However, he does not stay focused when he blocks and it leads to him missing blocks and allows his man to get involved in the play.

STRENGTH/EXPLOSIONSection Grade: 6.5

Despite looking 6-1 on film, he has good height at over 6-3 and has an outstanding build for a tight end -- he's so chiseled and cut up that he clearly spent a ton of time in the Maryland weight room. His muscular build and athleticism help him take a lot of hard hits and stay in the lineup consistently. He has tremendous natural explosiveness -- he bursts off the ball, gets down the seam in a flash and can get separation on deep routes. Additionally, after the catch he has an explosive burst up the field to make plays. He has good playing strength to fight through and defeat linebacker jams consistently, can keep his feet vs. hard hits and breaks tackles when he runs aggressively with the ball after the catch. He has the playing strength to be strong at the point of attack as a blocker, but too often, he blocks upright and does not block aggressively which limits his strength at the point of attack.
