Overview
Underrated three-year starter for the Longhorns who often gets overshadowed by the big-play ability of his teammates Aaron Ross and Michael Griffin. What Brown lacks in Ross's and Griffin's flair for the dramatic he more than makes up for in consistency. Recognized as UT's Outstanding Defensive Newcomer as a true freshman in 2003, Brown has developed into arguably Texas' most dependable defender. Blessed with speed, quickness and instincts for the position, Brown has shown the ability to play both man and zone coverage. His ability as a kick returner and overall special teams defender also intrigues scouts.
Unfortunately, scouts will also have to take into account Brown's off-field actions when considering drafting the talented cornerback. Brown was charged with gun and drug charges in early September of 2006. Though the drug charge was later dropped (Brown also took and passed a drug test), he was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon and was subsequently suspended for Texas' early season showdown with Ohio State and their elite receiver combination of Ted Ginn, Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez.
Analysis
Positives: Lean, athletic build. Looks a bit like a point guard, with lean legs and arms. Confident player who likes the challenge of shutting down the opponent's top wideout. Good quickness and some physicality at the point of attack to jam and re-route the receiver when in man coverage. Best attribute might be his overall athleticism in mirroring the receiver throughout the route. Tough to shake. Can be beat, but is usually in good position to make a play on the ball or, at the very least, make the quick tackle to minimize the yardage given up. Reads the action well when in zone coverage and has an excellent break on the ball. Good deep speed to run with receivers. Good leaping ability and will compete for the ball. Willing run defender who isn't afraid to get some dirt on his jersey.
Negatives: Gun charge is an immediate red flag. On the field, Brown has proven to be consistent, but isn't a game-changer. He lacks big-play ability, having only intercepted three passes despite seeing action in more than 40 games. At 5-foot-11, 192 pounds, Brown isn't a big cornerback and is only an adequate striker.
