Marquardt is a steady, powerful defender who enjoyed two excellent seasons with the Sun Devils, starting all 23 games he played in Tempe. He not only excelled as a run stuffer in the middle of the field, but also earned Academic All-Pac 10 Conference honors twice. He was a semifinalist for the 2007 Draddy Trophy, nicknamed the "Academic Heisman."
The talented defensive tackle comes from a family of defensive linemen. His father, Peter, played football at UCLA. One of his brothers, Daniel, was a teammate and defensive tackle at Brigham Young (2001-05) and another brother, Brian, competed as a defensive tackle at Weber State.
Marquardt earned Prep Star All-American honors as a senior at Rancho Buena Vista High School. He added All-CIF and All-League recognition and was named the Palomar League Most-Valuable Player as a senior. He ranked as one of the top two linemen in the state of California and was listed as "one of the top defensive line prospects in the country" by Prep Star. He produced more than 40 tackles as a senior, including a team-leading 18 sacks and four forced fumbles, returning one for a touchdown.
Marquardt enrolled at Brigham Young in 2000, but spent the season on the sidelines recovering from a left rotator cuff spring. He appeared in 10 games in 2001 as a reserve defensive end, collecting 11 tackles (9 solos) with three sacks and five stops for losses.
After spending the next two seasons serving on an LDS mission to Argentina, he returned to the gridiron at Brigham Young in 2004, appearing in 10 games. He saw limited action as a reserve defensive end, posting five tackles (3 solos) with a stop behind the line of scrimmage and two pressures.
Feeling he needed a change of scenery in a quest for more playing time, he left BYU and transferred to Arizona State in 2004, sitting out the season under NCAA transfer rules. In two seasons with the Cougars, he produced 16 tackles (12 solos) with three sacks for minus-27 yards, six stops for losses of 33 yards and three pressures in 20 games.
Marquardt started 12 games at left defensive tackle for the Sun Devils in 2005, missing most of the Southern California game with a neck injury. He was a first-team Academic All-Pac 10 pick, adding honorable mention for his field performance. He totaled 25 tackles (18 solos) with 3 ½ sacks and 7 ½ stops for losses.
In 2007, he again earned honorable mention All-Pac 10 Conference and academic all-league first-team honors. He started 11 games at left tackle, sitting out vs. Oregon State and Stanford with an ankle sprain. He posted 23 tackles (11 solos) with 1 ½ stops behind the line of scrimmage, two fumble recoveries and a blocked kick.
In 24 games at Arizona State, Marquardt started 23 contests. He recorded 48 tackles (29 solos) with 3 ½ sacks for minus-20 yards and nine stops for losses of 36 yards. He recovered two fumbles, advancing one 3 yards, deflected a pass and blocked one kick.
