NFL fines Miami LB Porter $150K for Las Vegas scuffle

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter was fined nearly $150,000 by the NFL for his part in a Las Vegas scuffle with another player.

The team said Friday that Porter has to pay $141,176 -- three game checks -- for punching Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Levi Jones on March 18 after a disagreement in the Palms hotel-casino. Porter pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery and paid a $1,000 fine in May.

Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said Porter met with him shortly afterward and apologized. Cameron said the league and team would not punish Porter further, despite NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's recent crackdown on player misbehavior.

"It's over. He has been fined and it's over, and I think he's learned from it," Cameron said at a charity golf tournament.

Porter signed a $32 million, five-year deal with the Dolphins in March after spending eight years with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cameron said he has talked with receiver Chris Chambers, who was arrested July 14 in Charlotte, N.C., on a charge of driving while impaired.

"He has our support," said Cameron, who declined to discuss the matter further.

Porter and Jones fought after exchanging words at a blackjack table, prosecutors said. Jones was cut on his forehead and not charged.

Jones said Porter "approached him to fight because they argue on the football field," according to a police report. The report says Porter hit Jones first.
