Through all the flaws, we've always loved Favre

Brett Favre was always that carefree gunslinger, throwing footballs into tight spots and putting himself into a few as well.

We all could relate to him. He loved the game. We loved watching him play. He was fearless. He was daring. He was the every man, the Southern kid with the aw-shucks, down-home attitude who happened to have a rocket for a right arm.

He also had flaws, which we all do. He had a substance-abuse problem early in his career. He was addicted to pain medication. He loved the nightlife as a young player, and admittedly was not the family man he should have been at times.

Maybe that's why so many loved Favre so much; fans saw themselves in him.

With his career seemingly over, his decision to retire coming out Tuesday, Favre leaves the game as one of the greatest passers of all time.

More important, he leaves as a better man.

Favre grew up, wised up. He stopped going out. He focused on his family. The troubles of his early years were left behind.

The young Favre was brash and arrogant and got caught up in the trappings of being an NFL star. The Favre of recent years dealt with tragedy after tragedy as a mature man, making him a better person.

He smiled more. He joked more. He got closer to his teammates.

When Packers coach Mike McCarthy took over in 2006, he didn't exactly have a warm relationship with Favre. That changed and the two became close. They teased each other a lot. McCarthy fined Favre for being late to a practice when Favre didn't pay close enough attention to the time, which Favre respected.

Favre always wanted the appearance that he was one of the guys, and the fine showed that he was. He was distant at times with teammates in his career, keeping to a select circle, but in recent years that changed, too. The outer layer of protection wasn't as hard to crack.

Last season, after the Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs on the road, Favre visited with friends and family in the hallway of Arrowhead Stadium. His brother and young nephew were there. Favre's face lit up as he talked about the kid's ability to throw the football. He made the kid show his motion to McCarthy. The coach said he had better footwork than his uncle.

"He's going to break all my high school passing records," Favre said.

How low to compare Favre's battle with pain medication to performance enhancing drugs. Obviously, Favre had a problem, but no one in their right mind would compare pain meds, used to mask pain, to Steroids or HGH.
Pain medication allows a player to play the game, it does not enhance the player's abilities. Steroids and HGH make a player stronger and faster artificially, they are ways to

I have news for you folks....Favre isn't the greatest QB ever.  Montana, Brady, Unitas, possibly Manning all come to mind.  But he is the greatest FOOTBALL PLAYER ever.  Combine his stats with a SB Ring, 3 MVPs (never done), consecutive start streak, enthusiasm, fire, energy and the ability to make the unbelievable play and this cat was by FAR the best football player ever to ...(more)

All through my work day I ran into people talking about Favre, One young man came into the room exclaiming it is the worst day of his life.Young sports fans have only known Favre era, while older fans like myself knew the tail end of Bart Starr and then the 20 yr drought till Favre came to town. Now the future and what it holds, only time will tell, but it's a sad day and maybe for a long time to co ...(more)

There is far too much to write in just this short space, but one of the dumbest things going is how many media outlets are (and have been the last 5 years) falling over themselves to cover will Brett retire.  And now trying to define his "greatness" while glossing over his "not-so-great" faults.

A summary: ...(more)

I myself am not a Packers fan but i loved to watch brett run onto the field and play the game the way that it was meant to be played. I wont admitt that he is retired until i see the starting lineups to the first packers game. I am sorry to say that the league will never be the same without brett farve on the field.

As much as I would have enjoyed Favre winning two Superbowls, he didn't. Maybe he should come back and win the other one this year!

Quite honestly, im shocked that Bret Favre retired this year. I guess he did not want to get upset by having a failing season, but I dont think any Quater back would want to retire with their last pass being an interception.

Thats what gets me. How could the guy quit knowing very well that he was responsible for his team not reaching the Superbowl? You never know what would have hapend ...(more)

Bret Favre was a great Quarterback, and for some reason, i always liked him. And this is coming from a Bears fan. Yes i admit i am sort of ashamed for liking Favre, but i Could not help myself. He was always fun to watch. You never knew if he would throw 3 TD's or 3 INT's in a game.

I rate Favre in the top 5 Qbs of all t ...(more)

I've read a lot of articles, surveys and blogs over the last few days talking about Favre's impact on the NFL.

Is he the greatest NFL player ever...the greatest QB ever...top 10...top 20...just a very good QB who broke the records because he hung around the league for 16 straight years.

The answer to each of these questions is...IT DEPENDS.

It all depends on your criteria for gre ...(more)

Anybody that doesn't put Brett Favre in the top 3 quarterbacks of all time (he is #1 btw) is ridiculous! Otto Graham? 174-135 td to int ratio is amazing? Stop jumping on the bandwagon and watch an NFL game! Brett was the only player in NFL history that even without the best talent, you would never bet against. He changed the game ...(more)

I know I am in the minority for saying somethings bad about Farve, but I will.

Whereas, I will say he was one of the greatest QB/player I have ever seen.

  • I think that Farve has repeatedly shown he is not the best teammate.  I think that his streak was selfish, two years ago when they had a record of 4-12, Aaron Rogers should have gotten more snaps (16 pass attem ...(more)
