If Favre wants to fly again, he might have nowhere to land

So the word is Brett Favre has an itch to play again?

Not to be crass, but will any team, including the Green Bay Packers, help him scratch it?

When Favre retired in March, there was plenty of speculation that he would be back. The doubters said it didn't seem sincere. They said he'd come back in the summer when his body sensed it was time to play again.

Favre denied the report Wednesday night that he wants back in, saying the talk is "rumor." However there are some league sources that know both Favre and his agent well who say he is interested in playing again.

If it's true, where does he land? Who wants him?

The word coming out of Green Bay, and something Favre has to know, is the Packers really don't want him back. They've moved on. Aaron Rodgers is their guy. He's younger and it's his time.

That's understandable. The Packers have the youngest team in the NFL and they have to settle the quarterback position. Playing the will-he-or-won't-he game with Favre again just doesn't make sense. The Packers have a group of players who can be competitive the next five years. Why hold off on finding out if Rodgers is the guy for one more season while Favre hangs on?

Packers coach Mike McCarthy is a big fan of Rodgers. He believes he can be the team's franchise passer. If not, they have rookie Brian Brohm waiting in the wings.

It's time to move on in Green Bay.

At 38, Favre has to know this. But what's out there?

The Packers will hold his rights if he wants to play again, so he can't just say he's back and sign somewhere else. They have to agree to let him go.

One team that would make a lot of sense is the Minnesota Vikings. They have a star-studded nucleus, but they have issues at quarterback with Tarvaris Jackson. Adding Favre just might make the Vikings a real Super contender, even if he has had some issues in the Metrodome in his career.

The problem with that is the Packers would never send Favre to a team in their own division. Can you imagine if he helped Minnesota win the NFC North? Packers general manager Ted Thompson would be fried like a cheese curd.
