News briefs: Titans sign second-rounder, release DE Fisher

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans are a player away from wrapping up contracts with all of their 2008 draft class after agreeing on terms with second-round defensive lineman Jason Jones.

The Titans only have top pick running back Chris Johnson still unsigned before camp opens Friday.

The Titans also announced Wednesday they had waived five players, including defensive end Bryce Fisher. They picked up Fisher in a trade with Seattle last September, but he only played in nine games and had only nine tackles. They also waived linebacker Jerrell Freeman, receiver Jason Rivers, defensive tackle Eric Taylor and quarterback Paul Thompson.

Jones was the 54th pick overall, and the 6-foot-5, 273-pound defensive lineman had 14 sacks at Eastern Michigan where he started 36 of 45 games. He had 19 ½ tackles for loss as a senior.

Panthers claim OT Spencer, release OL Riley

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers claimed tackle Charles Spencer off waivers from Houston and released offensive lineman Rueben Riley.

Spencer hasn't played in the NFL since breaking his leg during his rookie season in 2006. The former third-round pick provides more beef up front for Carolina. Spencer is 6-foot-4 and 337 pounds.

Riley spent last season on Carolina's practice squad.

Carolina continued to negotiate with unsigned first-round picks Jonathan Stewart and Jeff Otah. Players are scheduled to report to training camp in Spartanburg, S.C., on Friday.

Niners sign C Wallace, work on deal with No. 1 Balmer

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers signed center Cody Wallace to a four-year contract, leaving only first-round pick Kentwan Balmer unsigned on the day before players report to training camp.

Wallace, a fourth-round pick and 107th overall, was an all-conference lineman at Texas A&M last season. He will back up veteran starter Eric Heitmann on the 49ers' revamped offensive line.

Balmer, a defensive lineman from North Carolina, was the 29th overall pick. Earlier this week, general manager Scot McCloughan said he was confident he would have all six of the 49ers' draft choices in camp on time.

San Francisco has its first team meeting on Thursday afternoon, with its first practice Friday at its training complex.

Bills sign fifth-rounder Bowen day before opening camp

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Linebacker Alvin Bowen, Buffalo's fifth-round draft pick, signed on Wednesday, a day before Bills players were to report for the start of training camp.

Selected 147th overall out of Iowa State, Bowen was a three-year starter and an All-Big 12 Conference first-team selection in both his junior and senior seasons. He led the nation with 155 tackles in 2006 and finished with nine sacks in 46 career games. Bowen is expected to compete for a backup spot and fill a special teams role.

He is the sixth of Buffalo's 10 draft picks to sign as the team prepares to open camp in suburban Rochester on Friday morning.

The Bills have yet to sign their top three prospects, first-round cornerback Leodis McKelvin, second-round receiver James Hardy, and third-round defensive end Chris Ellis. Also unsigned is sixth-round running back Xavier Omon.

Packers sign three draft picks

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Draft picks Breno Giacomini, Matt Flynn and Brett Swain signed with the Green Bay Packers.

Giacomini played right tackle at Louisville and started all 12 games last season. He was Green Bay's fifth-round selection.

Flynn was selected in the seventh round. The quarterback led LSU to last year's national championship. He was the second quarterback selected by Green Bay this year; Brian Brohm was chosen in the second round.

Swain was Green Bay's second selection in the seventh round. The wide receiver led San Diego State with 58 catches for 973 yards and five touchdowns.

Saints' top two draft picks missing

JACKSON, Miss. -- Sedrick Ellis and Tracy Porter, the New Orleans Saints' top two draft picks, remained unsigned and absent while the rest of the team reported to training camp.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis showed little optimism while trying to estimate how many practices the two rookies would miss. He called their absence a result of "outrageous" demands on the part of agents representing highly drafted rookies across the NFL.

"There's been very little progress in the first round - period," Loomis said. "It's frustrating because I feel like it's about the agents of these guys not wanting to look bad as opposed to any concern for getting the player in here and getting him acclimated and getting him going in the right way in his first year in the league.

"They're all just waiting ... not wanting to be embarrassed by a deal that gets done after they do their deal, and frankly, they're looking for some huge increases," Loomis added. "They'll do a deal if you want to give them some outrageous increase. I just don't know any business that you hand out 20 percent, 30 percent increases every year. You're not going to be in business very long if you do that."

Boldin, Dockett arrive despite issues

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Wide receiver Anquan Boldin and defensive tackle Darnell Dockett put aside their contract squabbles and reported to Arizona Cardinals training camp on time.

Boldin slipped into the dormitory at Northern Arizona University without talking to reporters, while Dockett stopped to say he never really thought about staying out of camp.

The Cardinals have a running test Thursday, then begin workouts Friday.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said he didn't believe the contract issues would be a distraction in preparations for his second season with Arizona.

Raiders show up with questions

NAPA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders will have all of their players under contract by the start of this year's training camp.

Star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha will sign his $9.765 million tender offer and report to training camp in time for Thursday's first practice, a person with knowledge of Asomugha's plans said night on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been signed.

Earlier in the day, the Raiders signed their final two draft picks -- fourth-rounder Arman Shields, a receiver from Richmond, and sixth-rounder Trevor Scott, a defensive end from Buffalo.

Oakland signed first-round pick Darren McFadden last month to a $60 million, six-year deal that guarantees him $26 million.
