Bengals' Levi Jones arrested after club melee in Houston

HOUSTON -- Cincinnati Bengals tackle Levi Jones was arrested early Monday for attempting to take a night stick from a police officer following a bar fight.

"A group of police officers were working on clearing the area. They do this with batons they hold horizontally," police spokeswoman Sandra Aponte told the Associated Press. "Mr. Jones tried to disarm one of the officers by attempting to take his baton away."

Aponte said Jones, 24, was wrestled to the ground and arrested along with his cousin, Fred Robinson. Both Jones and Robinson had their bond set at $500 Monday and were awaiting transfer from the city to the county jail, where they could be released.

Jones, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound left tackle, completed his second season with the Bengals in 2003. He was Cincinnati's first-round draft choice in 2002, from Arizona State.

The Bengals will not comment until the matter is legally resolved, team spokesman Jack Brennan said Monday.

A fight inside the Mercury Room near closing time began the chain of events that caused the melee outside the club. Some patrons complained of paying $200 to get inside, only to be forced out, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday.
