Panthers coach Peter DeBoer said Boynton is close to returning. The Panthers acquired Boynton and fellow defenseman Keith Ballard, as well as a second-round pick, from Phoenix for Olli Jokinen in mid-June. Boynton, 29, scored three goals and added nine assists and 125 penalty minutes in 79 games last season. He'll make $2.95 million in 2008-09, the final season of his deal.
