Former Flyers F Thoresen takes detour to Swiss team

OSLO, Norway -- Former Philadelphia Flyers forward Patrick Thoresen signed a one-year contract with Swiss hockey club Lugano.

Thoresen told Norwegian news agency NTB he is looking forward to a year in Switzerland, but plans to return to the NHL after that.

"I want to return to the NHL, I'm not denying that. That is where I want to play," the 24-year-old Norwegian said.

Thoresen last week rejected a final contract offer from the Flyers because he had wanted a fixed salary regardless of whether he plays in the NHL or a farm team. According to NHL rules, he cannot join another NHL team this season.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said he had hoped Thoresen would return.

In February, the Flyers claimed Thoresen on waivers from the Edmonton Oilers, which he joined in 2006.

Thoresen had two goals and eight points in 38 games for the Flyers. He injured his groin in the first round of the playoffs against Washington.
