General manager Ray Shero would like to reach an agreement with center Jordan Staal on a long-term extension prior to the start of the regular season.

That gives him a bit more than two months to convince Staal, whose nine playoff goals the past two seasons are only two fewer than the total amassed by star center Sidney Crosby, that a long-term extension is in his best interest.

Staal's camp might not think along that line.

Staal can become a restricted free agent on July 1, 2009, and all indications point to him receiving substantial offers if that happens. The Penguins would like to sign him to an extension at length at least equal to the one inked by Evgeni Malkin on July 2 -- a term of five years. Staal would not command Malkin's annual salary ($8.7 million), but his camp is confident he would attract offers at $5 million annually as a restricted free agent.

Shero has had preliminary discussions with Staal's representative, Paul Krepelka, but neither side expects a deal to be reached this month.

(POLL)

Easy question to answer...yes or no......and you can give a reason if you like? My case would be yes and the reasoning would be the 2nd best ever to suit up for the Penguins and help win 2 Cups for Pittsburgh. At one time considered to be the greatest player in the world, whlie with the Pens of course, when Lemieux retired.I have never boo ...(more)

I know you dont wanna think about this although im anticipating at least 1 cup in 5yrs but that offseason could be bad.  Ryan Whitney and Sidney Crosby are UFA eligible.  If you bring back Crosby and we all hope they do then Whitney will certainly be ...(more)

Did anyone else happen to catch Bob Smizik's column in today's Post-Gazette?  The premise for his article is how much Hossa will get booed when he comes to town Feb 8.  He calls PGH fans knuckleheads for booing Jagr and Aramis Ramirez, then proceeds to use the knucklehead term 8 times during his article.

Look, I don't boo Jagr, or Ramirez, and never really even gav ...(more)

What does everyone think of the Pens possibly signing Murray?  If we could get him for under 2 million for a year or 2 I think it would be worth it.  Could be this year's Sykora if it happens.  I don't think you can go wrong having a proven goal scorer playing with someone like Sid or Geno.  Remember Pe ...(more)
