While Tampa Bay's terrible season left a terrible taste in the mouths of many within the franchise, there was a sign of a much sweeter taste as the summer months begin to approach the summer months.

The Lightning, which finished last in the 30-team league, won the NHL draft lottery on April 7 and will retain the first overall pick for the 2008 entry draft, which will be held in Ottawa on June 21 and 22.

And after a season in which it seemed everything that could go wrong did go wrong, something finally went right leaving Tampa Bay with the opportunity to fill a major hole in the lineup with a teenager who is expected to produce right away -- center Steven Stamkos. The 18-year-old native of Scarborough, Ontario, recently completed his second season with Sarnia in the OHL and finished second in the league with 58 goals in 61 games. He likely won't be returning to the junior ranks.

Stamkos was the top rated North American skater by NHL Central Scouting from before the season until the final rankings were released in mid-April. The Lightning have made it no secret they intend to select Stamkos with the top pick.

The slick Stamkos, who dazzles with his offensive skill but is also noted for his defensive awareness, helped Canada to a gold medal at the World Junior Championships in 2008 tying for the team lead with five assists and six points as one of two 17-year-olds on the team. He is expected to be able to step right in next season and center Tampa Bay's second line.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
The Lightning thumped division rival Carolina 6-1 on Nov. 14 for their fourth consecutive victory as center Vinny Lecavalier factored in on five of the six goals with a hat trick and two assists. Lecavalier capped off the night by completing his hat trick with a shorthanded goal against former teammate John Grahame.

TURNING POINT
There was plenty of hype on Dec. 13 surrounding Calgary's first visit to Tampa since Game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup finals, but the game turned out to be anything but another Cup final preview. The Lightning came into the game on a 3-1-1 stretch to pull its record to .500. Despite scoring six goals against Miikka Kiprusoff, Tampa Bay lost by three goals, starting a downward spiral to its season. The loss was the first of three in succession and began a stretch of seven losses in eight games and one win in 11 games. The loss to Calgary also marked the end of goaltender Marc Denis' career in a Lightning uniform; he was sent down to the minors shortly after suffering the loss in relief.

This thread is for two reasons.

  1. Thank god the season is over. Hockey is a terrible sport that is worse than watching MLS soccer. It is really bad.
  2. I love the new ownership. At least, I love what I think they're doing. I believe that Coolis or poolis or w/e his name is, is trying to move the team out west where he is from. I love that move. Hockey again, is ...(more)

Read today that VS wants to bring back puck tracker from the FOX days, but without the computer chip in the puck.  I didn't like puck tracker when it was on FOX, really distracting.  Thoughts?

Second, does this mean the NHL and VS have a long term relationship?  I hope not, can't stand watching on VS.   Not sure what network they get some assist f ...(more)

I love hocky, the energy, the skill, the whole game; I just don't know much about it.

I've been to many live game, none NHL, but it was still pro hockey. I'm a lighning fan, I started rooting for them a few years before they won the Stanley Cup. I watch the games when I can (when the wife and kids aren't around) but there are so many aspects of the game I still don't ...(more)

Thank-you Lightning for another great year! Granted, we didn't do as well as we would have liked, but I still love you guys. We did a few things right though: Got rid of some overpaid talent, brought in some fresh gritty blood, and got a lot of playing time for our 2 young net minders. I'm looking forward to next year...it'll ...(more)

Okay I think we all have to admit the trades Feaster made are pretty good right now.  I was sorry to see Richards go, but what a nice return.  Prospal for Pichard and a draft pick almost a steal.  Smith has been playing great (leaves the net a little to much for me) what a nice shut out against the Rangers. Jokinen has  ...(more)

Absolutely stood on his head tonight against the Penguins. He stopped both Crosby and Malkin on breakaways, then Sykora on a penalty shot as well as having many other very impressive saves. Although he did get the loss, he only gave up one goal. I think this is definetly a great sign of things to come...

Vaclav Prospal was traded to Philly today for a conditional draft pick and d-man Picard.

Who will be next?

I wore my Zamuner jersey to the Philly series.  I was there for all of the home playoff games and 1 and 2 of The Cup series.  It was without a doubt the best sports experience in my life - yes, better than the Bucs Superbowl win.  IMO nothing beats The Stanley Cup.  I love hockey.

That said, we can 'rah-rah' all we want but the truth is this team i

I would keep Brad Richards, Marty and Prospal, The rest of the team (including Vinny) can be traded in my opinion. The three guys I would keep work the hardest, you can build again around those three.

20 games and 12 pts to make up....yikes!

Not looking good for our boys.

A few bright notes though (pre-trading deadline) :

Shane Obrien has earned my respect...as has Craig MacDonald, Nik Tarnasky, and Matthieu Darche...good hard workers...I love to watch them play.

Well It looks like the end is near for both Richards and Boyle.  Serveral media outlets today have Richards going to the Blue Jackets and Boyle going to the Rangers.  We better get the players and picks in return. Hollywood boy is handed the keys without having paid ...(more)

Ever since Roma missed blocking that one penalty shot, and then subsequently missed blocking all of the shots in a shoot out in a subsequent OT game, I've been screaming to take him out and put HOMER back in.  Roma can't seem to handle those one on one shots, yet.  i understand he is young, but why did we have to play him at net over and over and over, until we finally fe ...(more)
