The standings painted a bleak playoff picture for the Maple Leafs after all results of Tuesday's games came in.

Not only did they fail to beat the eighth-place Boston Bruins in the opener of a key home-and-home series at the Air Canada Centre, but the Washington Capitals won to put four points between themselves and the Leafs for ninth.

Toronto must now win all of its last five games, starting Thursday back in Massachusetts, and hope for a major car wreck among teams ahead of them.

Coach Paul Maurice pointed to the absence of Mats Sundin and Nik Antropov as concerns.

"Clearly, we need better fight and fire in that game," Maurice said after Tuesday's 6-2 loss. "The clear difference in the game is physical, one-on-one play and we struggled."

BRUINS 6, MAPLE LEAFS 2: In a game where both teams were missing key personnel, Boston did a far better job pressing the attack in winning the opener of a home and home series.

Boston, which is usually tough with just a one-goal lead, was up 3-0 at one point of the second period, giving the penalty-prone Leafs little room throughout the evening.

Jason Blake scored for the Leafs late in the second period, his 15th, but still 25 short of last year's 40 with the Islanders.

Shawn Thornton put the Bruins back up by three on the first third-period goal that Leafs goaltender Vesa Toskala had allowed in four games. Alexei Ponikarovsky finished the Leafs' scoring with his 18th goal, extending his points' streak to six games.

Boston scored twice on five power plays, starting with Glen Murray's game-opening goal. Jeremy Reich, Phil Kessel, David Krejci and Marco Sturm had the other Boston goals.

Reich's was an empty netter as the desperate Leafs pulled Toskala with two minutes to play and the score 5-2.

A dream team put together by sportsnet

NEW President: Colin Campbell   New GM: Dave Nonis    New Coach:  Craig Hartsburg

The weakest spot is probably Hartsburg. Though he has done amazing things at the junior level ie Canadian junior gold medal, his nhl experience is somewhat limited.  Id definitely be willing to give him a shot; but why not Jo ...(more)

I thought the first priority of the AHL is to establish your talent and help them mature into better players.  Yet when the Marlies started their playoff season they went with the veteran Scott Clemmensen in net to start the series.  Justin Pogg ...(more)

If I was Cliffy Boy here is what I would do.

First of I would bring back Sundin, I don't care about the cap right now, with the deletions I make later on the 7 million will be fesible.  Sundin really helped Antropov develop last year, and with one more year of Sundin's tutalige  I think Antropov can peak at about 65 points.

Second. Find a tak

Here is the kind of organization that the Leafs are:

They treat there players like crap.  Gary Roberts, Joe Nieuwendyk.etc...

Every year Leafs fans complain about Sundin and ask for his head.  I can guarantee he will be tr

Heh leaf fans and leaf detractors;

What do you think of the day today?

1  - Unload Kilger, Belak and Gill for mid range draft choices and no other action?

2 - Cannot find a good enough deal or convince Tucker, Sundin, McCabe, Kaberle and Kubina to accept a move to a team with brighter fortunes?

For what it is worth, I take the view that we are losing be ...(more)

Should the Leafs resign Sundin for another year.  I feel that they should not resign Sundin if he is truly asking for seven million as the Hotstove analysts suggest.  They could sign two or three good players for that price.  However, if it is a contract under five million, let him play another year in leafland. Why not bomb next year and have a chance to draft Tavares.

Yesterday's loss to Boston looks to be the nail in the coffin for the Leafs postseason hopes.  I just thought I would throw the question out of who should not be in a Leaf uniform next year, whether through trade or buyout. Here are my thoughts:      &nbs p;      &n bsp;   Maurice- though I do respect his coaching abilities, ...(more)

I read a report that the Leafs (why not Leaves?) were looking into acquiring Ken Holland from Detroit.

I would love to see my 2nd favorite team benefit from his ability, but that would rip my beloved Wings to teh core. Everyone said Detroit would be scewed after the lockout with a salary cap and one President's cup later and we are still going strong all thanks to Holland.
