With five battle-tested seniors, Arkansas-Pine Bluff was expected to make a serious run for a Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.

But seniors William Byrd, Jarvis Gunter, Marcelle Goins, Tim Hamilton and Larry Williams did not provide the type of leadership needed throughout the season for the Golden Lions.

UAPB had two nice wins over Louisiana Tech in pre-conference play and started out SWAC play with road wins over Mississippi Valley and Alabama A&M. But then the roller-coaster ride began. Two losses, three wins, two losses and the lack of winning two straight the rest of the regular season had the Golden Lions finishing in the middle of the pack.

The season ended with a 70-59 loss to SWAC tournament champion Mississippi Valley in the SWAC semifinals, the second straight year the Golden Lions lost in the semifinals.
