Owls report: Getting inside
Kennesaw State was picked to finish seventh in the Atlantic Sun in the preseason media and coaches polls and that's exactly where the Owls landed. The third-year Division I program reached double digits in the win column for the third straight season after going 13-18 in 2006-07 and 12-17 in 2005-06. This time, they did it despite facing a tougher non-conference schedule that included opponents from the SEC (Auburn), Big 10 (Minnesota) and Mountain West (UNLV). Kennesaw State compiled an 8-5 home record and went 5-3 against the Atlantic Sun at the KSU Convocation Center, including a Jan. 24 win against league champion Belmont. After starting February with a four-game losing streak, the Owls rallied to win four of their last five games to finish 7-9 in the league standings. A five-point loss at Jacksonville on Feb. 23 kept them from posting their third consecutive .500 record in conference play (9-9 in 2006-07 and 10-10 in 2005-06). One way to measure the impressive strides made by head coach Tony Ingle's program is to compare it to North Florida, which also joined the Atlantic Sun from the Division II Peach Belt Conference in 2005-06. The Ospreys have won 12 games in three years and are 5-49 in league games. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. |
