Spring Training

Posted on: February 11, 2008 9:13 pm

I love this time of year. Pitchers and catchers report! What a beautiful sound. I know I should be getting excited about the race for the bullpen, but I can't. I know it is important for the team, but it is just not as sexy as trying to find your second baseman or your first baseman. The battle I am really looking forward to watching is the battle for first base. While maybe this is not as important to the future of the Yankees as filling the bullpen slots, it is much more exciting to me. Wilson Betemit, Shelley Duncan, Eric Duncan, Juan Miranda, Jason Giambi, who will it be? Who will be at first this season. I am personally hoping to see either Miranda or one of the Duncans light it up at Spring Training this year. I would love to see Eric Duncan live up to his potential and win the spot, but I find that hard to believe.

I am also looking forward to seeing how Jose Tabata does in his first extended Spring Training look. Their are a lot of young guys this year that show a lot of potential and while they wll not make the club, it will great to see them in action against major league players.

Spring Training

How could you think any of those first base choices are sexy?  Lol  Personally, I'm the opposite and am more interested in seeing the race for the bullpen because there's a lot more talent there, and talent that's really diverse.  I'm sorry, but I don't think it's happening with Eric Duncan which is a shame.  As for Shelley, I'm not a fan, sorry there too.  I am interested to see Juan Miranda since I don't know much about him.

Spring Training

The pitching is definitely the attraction for the Yankees this year. Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Joba Chamberlain...to go with Wang, Pettitte, Musssina...I can't wait to see how the three kids perform. 1st base, as long as they can catch the ball I don't care if they bring back Eric Soderholm...

Spring Training

I wouldn't rule out the possiblity of Morgan Ensberg coming out of nowhere to win some PT at first.  This is a guy who is only two years removed from a 30+ HR season with the Astros.  Now his track record is just screaming of some sort of performance-enhancing drugs, but perhaps he just needed some better guys batting around him.
