Rankings: How they Work

A player's ATP Champions Race position is based on points received from the four Grand Slams -Australian Open, French Open at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and U.S. Open- the nine Tennis Masters Series events -Indian Wells, Calif.; Miami, Fla.; Monte-Carlo, Monaco; Rome, Italy; Hamburg, Germany; Montreal, Canada; Cincinnati, Ohio; Madrid, Spain and Paris, France- and his best five additional results from International Series and International Series Gold events.

The Tennis Masters Cup, played in Shanghai, China from November 9-16, 2008 will count as an additional 19th tournament for the eight players who qualify.

Every player, regardless of his performances in the previous year, starts with zero points.

To determine seedings and tournament entry status, it is not practical to use the ATP Champions Race.

His entry status will be determined by his standing on the ATP Entry System, a rolling 52-week calculation based on the same 18 tournament rules that apply to the ATP Champions Race.

The Race, while indicating the hottest players in the game at any stage, does not necessarily indicate an overall standing in the game.

This is especially valid at the start of the year when early tournament winners may well be leading the Race but are not yet established top players for the purposes of seeding and tournament entry.

The WTA Tour rankings are based on a rolling, 52-week system, using a player’s best 17 results for singles and 11 for doubles over the past 12 months.

The purpose of the Race to the Championships is to determine the 8 singles players and four doubles teams that will contest the WTA Tour’s season-ending Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships in Madrid, Spain 6-12 November 2006.

Points earned from all WTA Tour events played are added to produce the separate weekly Singles and Doubles Team standings.

The USOS Bonus Points System is designed to link the performance of the top three men and in the US Open Series events to their performance at the US Open. In 2006, the US Open Series Bonus Challenge men’s and women’s winners receive double the prize money at the US Open. Second place finishers receive an additional 50% and third-place finishers receive an additional 25% of US Open prize money.
