America East Conference report

SportsLine.com report
April 5, 2000

In the paint

The Terriers finished the season on a good note, winning four of their last seven games, including the team's third victory of the season over arch-rival Northeastern in the first round of the America East tournament.

But overall, five conference wins and just seven overall was a disappointing campaign for coach Dennis Wolff and friends, but injuries and ineligibilities played a major role in the team's poor record.

2000-2001 glance

On the positive side, BU had the conference's Rookie of the Year in forward Paul Seymour, who at 6-foot-6 can play any of three positions next season. Before being declared academically ineligible, freshman guard Matt Turner was the team's third-leading scorer, so his return is important to next season's success.

The team graduated only two players this season, so the future looks bright.

The coach

Dennis Wolff has now coached six seasons at BU, three winning and three losing, although his career record is still over .500 at 93-83. He understands how the rebuilding process works, having spent time as an assistant with Wake Forest in the late 1980s and with Virginia in the early '90s.

Now, after nine and seven wins the past two seasons, it's time to bring this team to the next step in the process, which should be about a .500 season.

Who'll be back

Almost everyone returns, including five freshmen and five sophomores from this season's team. That group includes starters Jacob Kudiacz, Mark Michalek, and Seymour, as well as the team's leading bench player this season, Dereck Franklin, a sophomore guard.

Who's gone

Two seniors are departing, leading scorer Jean Avebe, a forward, and Mike Costello, a guard and the team's best three-point shooter. Both were starters this past season.
