Atlantic 10 report | NCAA Tournament report
SportsLine.com Reports A glance at 2001With Mark Ashman gone, the Flyers will need to tighten up their interior. The perimeter players are there in Tony Stanley, Brooks Hall and David Morris. Oliver Purnell, a guard himself when he played on Old Dominion's NCAA Division II national championship team in 1975, now must hope that he can develop 6-9, 215-pound Keith Waleskowski into a capable replacement. Waleskowski's numbers in high school (18.1 points per game, 9.4 rebounds) show promise. Who'll be backMorris, Stanley and Hall will return next season along with another promising freshman, Waleskowski, who takes over in the middle for Ashman. Cain Doliboa provides great size at the guard spot along with the 6-6 Hall. Forward Yuanta Holland provided quality minutes this season in a backup role and also could see more time next year. Who's goneAshman and Edwin Young are the only players to leave who saw significant playing time this year. Key newcomersPurnell is expecting good things from 6-5, 200-pound forward Sam Smith, an incoming freshman who will get to learn behind Stanley and Hall next year. He is expected to play and will probably pick up some of the minutes lost by the graduation of Edwin Young. The development of Waleskowski is imperative for the Flyers' inside strength with the loss of Ashman. He was a late bloomer in high school, increasing his averages from 10 points and 6.5 rebounds as a junior at Archbishop Alter High, to 18.1 and 9.4 as a senior. He spent his redshirt year working on his body in the weight room and his foot work on the court and is expected to make an impact next season. |
