A glance at 2001

Even without Khalid-El Amin, the Huskies will be very good. Calhoun has filled the program with good, young players. Albert Mouring and Edmund Saunders are juniors who will lead a good team. Expect big jumps in production from Ajou Deng and Tony Robertson, two talented first year players who are ready for action.

Who'll be back

The leadership of El-Amin must be replaced, but Mouring, Saunders and Ajou Deng help form a solid core as well. The incoming freshman are all good enough to help right away, especially Caron Butler and Taliek Brown.

Who's gone

Kevin Freeman, Souleymane Wane and Jake Voskuhl were huge winners over their four years. Joined by El-Amin, the four losses will be tough to overcome.

Key newcomers

Coming off the national title, the Huskies cashed in with a banner early signing class. All three signees are national top 50 recruits.

  • Caron Butler (6-6, 230, Fr.): A Maine Central Institute student, Butler is reportedly considering a jump to the NBA. But if he comes to college, he's an instant scorer.
  • Taliek Brown (6-3, 180, Fr.): The incoming point guard of the future is a McDonald's All-American who can shoot and penetrate.
  • Scott Hazelton (6-7, 225, Fr.): A combo forward who also was a McDonald's All-American.
