Despite a respectable 62-53 record in four seasons, Eastern Michigan chose not to renew the contract of head coach Milton Barnes. Barnes, who took over in '96 when Ben Braun bolted for Cal, led the Eagles to a 15-13 record last season.

A glance at 2001

With leading scorer Calvin Warner back (14.6 ppg), the Eagles are in good shape for the coming season. Antonio Gates (10.2 ppg) also returns for Eastern.

The coach

Jim Boone, the head coach at Robert Morris College for the past four seasons, was hired to replace Barnes. Boone guided Robert Morris to an 18-12 record last season and a berth in the NEC tourney championship game.
