Round 1 Hemsley hits, and Hurricanes hold off Hogs L 71-75

SportsLine.com Report
April 3, 2000

A Glance at 2001

The Hogs' run through the SEC Tournament should serve as a warning for the rest of the league for next season.

Richardson loses only one player - Walker -- meaning next year the Hogs will go from being one of the youngest teams in the league to one of the most experienced. Johnson, this year's co-Freshman of the Year, will become a candidate for Player of the Year as only a sophomore.

The Hogs will still be small, but the addition of November signee Michael Jones (6-9, 190) of Little Rock Parkview will add some size. The most encouraging news for Hog fans is that Richardson once again seems to have assembled a collection of players who fit his fast-paced style.

The Coach

As if there were any doubt about Richardson's ability to coach, he goes and puts this -- of all teams -- in the tournament. Not one prone to outward shows of joy, he was downright giddy following the SEC title game.

And why not? He has a new building, the undying love of the entire state and a team loaded with solid young players. He already has one national title and it will be a surprise if he doesn't land another one in the near future.

Who'll Be Back

Just about everybody. Including Joe Johnson, who will be one of the SEC's top players for as long as he chooses to stay in Fayetteville.

Who's Gone

Chris Walker was the team's second leading scorer and a fine leader, but he was a former walk-on, so he can be replaced. The key will be for one of these young guys to step forward and assume a leadership role.

Key Newcomers

Michael Jones (6-9, 190): Jones is another athletic player for Richardson to throw into his defensive sets. He gives the team some much-needed size and, if he develops offensively, another scary option.
