Major League Baseball celebrated its All-Century Team during the 1999 World Series, and it turned simmering fires of discussion of the game's greatest players into raging infernos. Now, SportsLine has taken the look back a step further and has chosen 100-year teams for every team except the Diamondbacks and Devil Rays, whose debuts were just two seasons ago.
A starting lineup, rotation of five starters and a reliever were selected.

Some of the selections will surprise. In breaking down the game's greats by team there are some tough calls, as some teams have had a whole run of outstanding players at particular positions -- and in some cases, no superstars at other positions. There are Hall of Famers who had to be left on the bench and, in some cases, players who won't get near Cooperstown who are in starting lineups.
There was some outstanding competition for positions. Do you go with Nellie Fox or Eddie Collins at second base for the White Sox? Has the Athletics' pitching through time been good enough to leave off a one-time AL MVP in Vida Blue? Is Chipper Jones' recent performance with the Atlanta Braves enough to merit a starting spot at third base over Eddie Mathews? Does a player who spent more time with a team merit more consideration that another who had just a few outstanding seasons before moving on?
Baseball has been made the nation's pastime for its history and the debates it continues to prolong. These teams are simply meant to keep the debates active and possibly add some fresh backing to a new argument.
Of course, no team, no matter how chosen, ends up being completely satisfying to all fans. While these teams are meant to be the most accurate portrayal of each franchise's greatest players, they are certainly up for debate. SportsLine welcomes your comments.
