Tripping

Back to glossary

Tripping earns an offender a two-minute visit to the penalty box and is assessed when a player uses his stick or any part of his body to cause an opponent to trip and fall. This is often a judgment call by referees. Tripping penalties are not called when trips occur simultaneously with a completed play, nor if a player hook checks the puck away and causes an opponent to fall. A player tripped on a breakaway is automatically awarded a penalty shot.
