This is the most likely option given both clubs' short commitments to their cities plus their longer-term financial problems. Moreover, it eliminates two of the leagues' smaller media markets. Twins owner Carl Pohlad has already indicated he'll take the buyout money and run, while Expos owner Jeffrey Loria bought out his partners before this season and would gladly take over a team other than the Expos.

* Teams changing divisions and/or leagues
| Possible ownership changes |
| Expos owner Jeffrey Loria takes buyout and purchases Marlins, takes three Expos players, five prospects and manager Jeff Torborg with him |
| Marlins owner John Henry buys Angels from Disney, takes 3-4 Marlins players with him |
| Twins owner Carl Pohlad takes buyout, reportedly up to $250 million |
| Pros | Cons |
| Expos have no long-term commitments aside from player contracts and spring training complex, the latter they share with Cardinals anyway | Potential showdown with Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura or state legislature |
| Loria gets wish to remain a team owner | Moving Loria to Marlins doesn't solve Florida's problems unless he can negotiate move to D.C./Northern Virginia |
| Selig gets radical realignment he's wanted for years | Arizona doesn't want to move to AL |
| Pohlad wants out | Twins were actually good this season |
| Henry remains an owner, has past ties to Southern California | |
| MLB eliminates Twins' messy stadium situation | |
| Top players possibly available in dispersal draft |
