The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to "the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability" as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association

Ron Francis, C, Hurricanes
Francis wins the award for the third time after receiving only 18 penalty minutes in 80 games this season. He was fourth in the league in assists and reached several career milestones including 500 goals, 1,500 games and 1,700 points.

Nicklas Lidstrom , D, Red Wings
One of only 2 defensemen in 20 years to be voted a finalist in this category, Lidstrom took only 20 penalty minutes in 78 games. He was second among defensemen with 59 points.
 

Joe Sakic , C, Avalanche
Last year's Lady Byng winner, Sakic took only 18 penalty minutes in 82 games, while leading the NHL in faceoffs taken. He finished sixth in the NHL scoring race with 79 points.
