Cards re-sign QB Brown to two-year deal
TEMPE, Ariz. -- After going 3-2 as a starter last season, quarterback Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Cardinals confirmed that Brown signed a two-year contract. When Jake Plummer suffered a broken right ring finger in an October 17 loss to Washington, Brown stepped in and struggled in losses to New England and the New York Jets, but rebounded with back-to-back wins over Detroit and Dallas. Brown, who turns 30 on Friday, earned his third consecutive win as a starter in a November 28 game against the Giants, but needed Plummer to come off the bench and rally the Cards to a 34-24 victory. The Cards finished fourth in the NFC East with a 6-10 record. In eight games, Brown completed 84-of-169 passes for 944 yards and two touchdowns with six interceptions last season. In 1998, he attempted just five passes. A first-round pick of the New York Giants in the 1992 supplemental draft, Brown became the team's starting quarterback in 1994. He set career-bests with 254 completions for 2,814 yards in 1995. Brown suffered a torn chest muscle in Week Six of the 1997 season, and never regained his starting job after backup Danny Kanell led the Giants to the playoffs. He was waived after the season and signed by the Cardinals as an unrestricted free agent. Copyright 2000 SportsTicker Enterprises, L.P.
