The Cincinnati Bengals, unusually active this spring in signing veteran
free agents from other teams, on Monday retained two of their own players.
The club announced the signing of backup free safety Greg Myers, an
unrestricted free agent, and restricted wide receiver James Hundon.
SportsLine.com confirmed that Myers signed a two-year contract which
includes a signing bonus of $150,000 and base salaries of $500,000 (for
2000) and $575,000 (2001). Hundon's contract is for one year, at $472,000,
the qualifying tender for a restricted free agent. The agents for the
players confirmed the terms.
A four-year veteran and former fifth-round draft choice in 1996, Myers
opened the 1999 season as the Bengals' starter at free safety, a status he
held during the 1997 and '98 campaigns. After four games, however, he lost
the starting spot to rookie Cory Hall. He played in 12 games and had 37
tackles, one interception and five passes defensed.
For his career, Myers, 27, has played in 58 games, with 34 starts. Although
the safety position has gotten more crowded in Cincinnati with the free
agent acquisition of Darryl Williams of Seattle, it is anticipated Myers
will vie for playing time in the Bengals' nickel packages.
Hundon, a three-year veteran, played in six games and had just one catch
during an injury-marred 1999 season. He has 36 career appearances, with
three starts, and has 28 receptions for 416 yards and four touchdowns.
