After 17 seasons at Temple, Dean Demopoulos now gets a chance to run his own program.

Demopoulos, a long-time Owls' assistant under John Chaney, was named coach at Missouri-Kansas City on Monday.

Although no financial terms of the contract were disclosed, the Philadelphia Daily News reported Monday that Demopoulos was to be a given a four-year contract by the Mid-Continent Conference school.

Demopoulos joined John Chaney's staff as a full-time assistant prior to the 1983-84 season and has helped the Owls reach the NCAA Tournament 16 times in 17 years. A native of Philadelphia, he coached at Kennett (PA) High School before being hired by Chaney.

Demopoulos takes over for Bob Sundvold, who was released from his responsibilities on May 23, despite leading the Kangaroos to a 16-13 record, their first winning campaign in seven seasons.
