NEW YORK -- Jennifer Capriati, Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Kwan will be among the contenders for Sportswoman of the Year next month. The Women's Sports Foundation will announce the winners at its sports awards gala Oct. 15. Capriati (tennis), Sorenstam (golf) and Kwan (figure skating) will be joined by eight other candidates in the individual category: Carolyn Dorin Ballard (bowling), Inge DeBruijn (swimming), Stacy Dragila (track), Siri Lindley (triathlon), Ellen MacArthur (sailing), Andrea Raducan (gymnastics), Mary Riddell (disabled skiing) and Ryoko Tamura (judo). The finalists for the 2001 team sportswoman award are: Jen Adams (lacrosse), Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar (beach volleyball), Jennifer Botterill (ice hockey), Jen Davidson and Jean Racine (bobsled), Lisa Fernandez (softball), Lisa Leslie (basketball), Tiffeny Milbrett (soccer); Delphine Regeard (marathon orienteering) and Coralie Simmons (water polo).
