Jane Kaczxmarek

USA Tennis USTA

Jane Kaczmarek: Welcome to everyone! Brad and I are happy to talk to you about tennis and the fun it is not only as a couple but we look forward to our children playing as well. They are 3 and 1 and run after the balls which comes in handy. We're glad to talk about tennis and what a great family sport it is!

Question: How did you both get involved in May's "USA Tennis Month"?

Jane Kaczmarek: We were asked and happy to participate. Brad was a player in high school and I played growing up.

Bradley Whitford: One of the good things about the USTA is they are trying to get tennis to people who can't afford it with free and low cost tennis. When asked, we were thrilled to be able to do this.

Question: Are there any other celebrities besides yourselves who help promote USA Tennis Month?

Bradley Whitford: There are players like Pam Shriver and Jim Courier who are helping. We are the only ones with no ability who are promoting!

Question: This is the fourth year for USA Tennis Month, have you been involved with it in the past and do you plan on doing more with it in the future?

Bradley Whitford: We have not been involved in the past but would certainly love to be involved in the future. This is only our first year.

Question: How long have you both been playing tennis?

Jane Kaczmarek: I started in the alley behind our house on the South Side of Milwaukee. My dad took us out in the alley and the man hole cover was the nets and the garbage cans were out of bounds. It was fun and we liked to play. We moved to the suburbs and there was the Greendale Club and we played there. Tennis was big there when I moved and there are a lot of good players there.

Bradley Whitford: I started when I was about five years old. Four or five. So I have been playing for 15 years! No no.. since I was four or five.

Question: Who's a better tennis player? Bradley or Jane?

Bradley Whitford: I am a better tennis player and Jane is better at mind games! Which she uses on the court to humiliate me! And leave me confused and wandering aimlessly around the court.

Question: With pros like Zina Garrison and Jim Courier doing things to help promote the event - do you ever get a chance to play against them and if so - do they let you win?

Bradley Whitford: I have not played Jim Courier yet. But unless he pulls some of my wife's mind games on me I am confident I can destroy him in a game of tennis!

Question: Hello Jane and Bradley, who do you think are the best tennis players in the world at this point?

Bradley Whitford: I love watching the Williams sisters play. And it has been great to watch Andre Agassi become this seasoned, great champion who is never done when you think he might be. But he has kind of gone from a spoiled young arrogant kid to a seasoned humble pro.

Jane Kaczmarek: Ditto!

Question: Can you tell us more about what kinds of programs are being offer during USA tennis month? Free lessons?

Bradley Whitford: Yes! There are free lessons and low cost lessons. At different places over the country. You can go to www.usatennis.com and get more information there.

Question: Will you guys be at any of the other scheduled sites throughout the month besides tomorrow's event?

Bradley Whitford: We are only scheduled for that event.

Question: How important do you see tennis being in helping to bring families together?

Bradley Whitford: Well I think it is very important to get families away from their televisions and doing things together. This is a good tool because you can talk and have fun and not be a high pressure situation at all.

Jane Kaczmarek: It is a great thing for people to play together. Rules aside you can just hit the ball back and forth. It teaches you to compete against yourself and be the best you can be. But it also teaches teamwork and the learning of rules. And it is good exercise. My favorite time is to play with people who like to chat while playing. It is a great way to enjoy yourself, visit and get exercise at the same time.

Question: Are any professional tennis players giving lessons during USA tennis month? Specifically in S. Florida?

Jane Kaczmarek: Several programs are taking place in South Florida. You can get more details by going to the website (www.usatennis.com). There are tennis pros giving lessons but not the tournament players that we know of.

Bradley Whitford: We want to encourage people to play tennis and not only play competitively but as a way to do something fun with your family. Talk, get some exercise, and turn that TV off! Play Tennis!

Jane Kaczmarek: I want to remind people how good it feels to HIT something! Maybe Lois on Malcolm will take up tennis! Hitting a ball well is one of the great small satisfactions in life. It feels good to get out of the house and smack something hard and do it well and know it was a good thing to do.
