Slow Start: After a glittering Opening Day on which he went 3-for-5 with
his first big league double, homer (off KC's Dennis Leonard) and RBI, he
plunged into a deep slump (4-for-55). Was batting only .117 (7-60) on May
1 after 18 games and his career big league avg over two seasons was at that
point .121 (12-99) in 41 games.

Start of Something Big: The next day, May 2, he picked up a pair of scratch
hits and was beaned by fellow rookie Mike Moore. Missed only one game after
the beaning, however, and batted .281 (151-538) from May 2 to the end of
the season.
