Played mostly shortstop in 1978 in Bluefield. Played in Florida Instructional
League after both 1978 and 1979 seasons. Was Southern League's All-Star third
baseman in 1980 and tied for league lead in games. One of 2 Charlotte players
that year to break club's home run record: Rip had 25 and Drungo Hazewood
had 28. Cal had homered only 8 times in his 2 previous pro seasons combined.
He also led SL third basemen in fielding (.933, TC-415, E-28).

Helped Caguas win Puerto Rican title after the 1980 season (the first of
his two seasons in Caribbean winter ball).

In 1979, he was picked as shortstop on Topps' Class A All-Star team, though
he played more games at third (58) than at shortstop (52). Led Florida State
League in doubles that year.

Signing: Was signed by the late Dick Bowie June 13, 1978 after the club drafted
him June 4. Orioles Scouting Director Gary Nickels had scouted him at that
time for the Chicago Cubs.
