What Others Say About Tiger Woods |
| What's a good tournament for him? Winning it. He's good enough. | |
| Greg Norman | |
The first time I ever saw Arnold Palmer, I said, "There's a star." The first time I saw Jack Nicklaus, I said, "Superstar." I feel the same way about Tiger Woods. As long as he maintains his attitude, he's got it. He's a superstar on the horizon. |
|
| Gary Player | |
| I haven't played there yet. | |
| Sandy Lyle, 1992 | |
| There isn't a flaw in his golf or his makeup. He
will win more majors than Arnold Palmer and me combined. Somebody is going to dust my
records. It might as well be Tiger, because he's such a great kid. He has the finest, fundamentally sound golf swing I've ever seen. He's going to be around a long, long time, if his body holds up. That's always a concern with a lot of players because of how much they play. A lot of guys can't handle it. But it looks like he can. |
|
| Jack Nicklaus | |
| If you got the game, you got the game. That's why Tiger Woods is out there playing golf with Greg Norman. | |
| Shaquille O'Neal | |
| I see no reason why Tiger Woods won't become a great player. Man, can he smoke some shots. A little refinement on Tiger's short game and there'll be nothing. He's already pretty darn imposing. | |
| Corey Pavin | |
| He's tough. I wish I was that tough when I was his age (20). | |
| John Daly | |
| When Tiger was 6 months old, he would sit in our garage, watching me hit balls into a net. He had been assimilating his golf swing. When he got out of the high chair, he had a golf swing. | |
| Earl Woods (Tiger's father) | |
| He hits it long. His shoulders are impressively quick through the ball. That's where he's getting his power from. He's young and has great elasticity. He's just a very talented kid. Leave it at that. He's better than me, sure when I was that old. | |
| Nick Faldo | |
| He's got everything. He' not a great player yet
because he hasn't won any major championships, but it's a matter of time. He's an
outstanding talent. I didn't realize how tall he is. His swing is very solid it seems. Overall the fundamentals seem to be there and he's obviously got a very mature head on his shoulders. He's got a kind of presence. It seems like he's unruffled. He's a lucky person. |
|
| Nick Price | |
| He's a real inspiration for the kids. Everybody felt a kinship with him. He's become the role model for my kids. He's a pioneer. | |
| Jacci Woods (directs the Young Minority Golf Association in Detroit, MI) | |
| In my many years of coaching, he is the most focused in terms of the important aspects of his life and his goals. He is a giver, not a getter, and a product of two amazing parents. | |
| Wally Goodwin (Stanford Golf Coach) | |
| You can't be compared to a Hogan or a Nicklaus until you do it. But after having dinner with Tiger, he's the ;most mature 18-year-old golfer I've known. | |
| Ken Venturi | |
| Tiger is the best athlete that this level of golf has seen. He's lean, he's strong, his swing is marvelous. I couldn't see th ball come off the club for the first 27 holes. It came off the club that fast. | |
| Buddy Marucci (was second to Woods in the 1995 U.S. Amateur Championship) | |
| I've never seen anybody out here that amounted
to anything who didn't have any cockiness. That's only a plus to me. That's not a
negative. I think he can be very good. He hits the ball a long way and he knows how to
win. He's in the mold of a Tom Watson, in that he'll hit the ball in the trees and undaunted go it there, flail it out and make something out of it. He's got an overall flair for the game. It looks to me like he really loves what he does and he can't wait to get up in the morning, go hit some balls and go play. |
|
| Gary McCord | |
| I think we're looking at the next major superstar in golf. Tiger has a flair for the dramatic and one of those smiles that lights up the screen. | |
| Don Ohlmeyer (President NBC West Coast) | |
| Like all great champions, Tiger has the ability to raise his game when he has to. He's not going to burn out because he plays for his own joy and passion. | |
| Jay Brunza (Tiger's sports psychologist) | |
| He's as good at his age as Jack (Nicklaus) was, and look at what Jack has done in the gime of golf. That's the highest praise I can give anyone, to compare him to Jack Nicklaus. | |
| Michael Bonallack, (Secretary, Royal and Ancient Golf Club) | |
| I have told Tiger and his parents when they asked me that I think, physically, his game is at a level where he can play and succeed on the professional tour. | |
| Butch Harmon (Tiger's golf coach) | |

| Media Statement: The purpose of this statement is to explain my heritage for the benefit of members of the media who may be seeing me play for the first time. It is the final and only comment I will make regarding the issue. My parents have taught me to always be proud of my ethnic background. Please rest assured that is, and always will be, the case -- past, present, and future. The media has portrayed me as African-American; sometimes, Asian. In fact, I am both. Yes, I am the product of two great cultures -- one African-American and the other Asian. On my father's side, I am African-American. On my mother's side, I am Thai. Truthfully, I feel very fortunate, and EQUALLY PROUD, to be both African-American and Asian! The critical and fundamental point is that ethnic background and/or composition should NOT make a difference. It does NOT make a difference to me. The bottom line is that I am an American... and proud of it! That is who I am and what I am. Now, with your cooperation, I hope I can just be a golfer and a human being. |
