Tiger Woods Foundation History   A Personal Dream Wow! It was just a few years ago that Tiger Woods relinquished his final two years as a Stanford undergraduate to pursue his childhood dream of professional golf. No one could have predicted his incredible impact on both the game of golf and greater society in such a short time. Even on Capitol Hill there was discussion of the “Tiger Woods Bill,” proposed to give multi-racial citizens what they have been lacking for decades, their own “multi-ethnic category” in the eyes of the Federal Government. Despite being named as the 1997 Associated Press Athlete of the year, winning the PGA Tour money title, becoming the youngest Masters Champion of all time, and being named to the Ryder Cup, his most remarkable achievement as a professional is, undoubtedly, the establishment of the Tiger Woods Foundation. The Foundation, established in December of 1996, has conducted 11 junior golf clinics and exhibitions in inner-cities across the United States and held a concert benefit which raised over $500,000. The Foundation has funneled the money it has raised back into local communities and significantly impacted organizations which support family values and adult involvement in childrens’ lives. Earl Woods, President of the Tiger Woods Foundation, has stated “Tiger is a great golfer, but he is a much better person.” Indeed, Tiger has always wanted to make a difference in the lives of others and unlike many athletes he is doing more than giving his money away; he is taking an active part in touching the lives of America’s youth. His initial $500,000 donation provided the necessary venture capital to establish the Foundation, and his corporate contracts have raised over $2 million in donations to the Foundation. More importantly, Tiger has devoted personal time and energy toward fulfilling his dream and has touched thousands of children in ways money cannot buy. Together with his father, Tiger and the Foundation are working to ensure that his goal of teaching children how to “dream big” will come true. The Future Who would have guessed the Tiger Woods Foundation, once simply a dream, would become what it is today? Granted, it has had its share of stumbling blocks over the past two years, and will continue to have them as it grows. But its message is clear, its vision is pure, and its members all believe in one fundamental philosophy: enriching the lives of everyone it touches.
